Ryder News Jun 27, 2019

Ryder News for June 27, 2019

I’ve had lots of correct guesses as to the identity of the Mystery Photo from last week. The photo was that of Konrad (Konnie) Kronbach. I heard from Marlys Rodahl, Shirley Bezanson, Richard and Judy Kimball, Vanona Rime, Lorraine Nelson and Sheryl Tolson. Terry Johanson said it was much too easy and everyone would know who it was! I said we had to have an easy one once in awhile.

Mystery Photo
A new mystery photo for this week. Any idea who these gals are? They grew up in the Ryder area and graduated from Ryder High.

Enjoying lunch at the Hiddenwood Picnic

Kids races at the Hiddenwood Picnic
I went to the annual 117th Hiddenwood Picnic on Sunday. There were 123 people in attendance according to the sign in book. KX News was there taking movies and they also interviewed my grandson Johnny McGrath. He is supposed to be on the  ten o’clock news tonight (Sunday). Wonder if he said anything embarrassing. Just watched the interview on TV and he did great!!
The church service was led by Pastor John Warner and since it was a short service, the lunch started early. The tables of food were fairly groaning due to the amazing variety of potluck dishes that were placed upon them. Almost every year I take taco salad and it always disappears in a short amount of time! Luckily I did manage to get some. I get scolded if I don’t make the salad!
After lunch, they had the kids races and Johnny managed to get $2.75 in quarters. They even had races for 13 and up and some of the racers were well over 13, which made for a lot of fun.
Doug  Wurtz was the MC again this year and he did a fine job. He mentioned that the Hiddenwood group has lost 4 people this year. Mike Larson, Bud Karna, Wayne Hansen and Derald Larson. Daniel and Pastor Jonathan Starks were the entertainment for this year and the audience sure did enjoy them. John Warner sang the Star Spangled Banner and if you sat at the front table like I did, it sure was loud! When the entertainment took their breaks, the MC (Doug Wurtz) and his sister, Denise Johnson held some of the prize drawings. I won a prize of a cutting board, pot holder and tape measure. I enjoyed visiting with people I don't get to see very often. It was nice hearing them tell me that they were glad that I was back writing the news for Ryder. I hear that quite often and it means a lot to me. This isn’t an easy job as you are always looking for news and hoping you hear from readers with their news. I talked to Greg and Cathy Landon and told them to give me some news or to make some up! They told me that they don’t do anything so guess that is as much news that I’m going to get from them!! It seemed that the door prize drawings went on forever and almost everyone received a prize. I think there was only 1 person that didn’t. All in all, it was a fun time for everyone.
Kathy Kimball had this to say, “Kathy and Dave Kimball went to the Hiddenwood picnic. It was a beautiful day and the crew did a great job gathering gifts!!! Daniel was fantastic, good company and they had fun visiting with everyone. It was a great day!!!”

After the picnic, Staci and John McGrath took their boat out on the lake and caught 3 fish. They kept the 5 lb. 24.5 inch walleye and threw the other 2 back.

Ryder Recalls (submitted by Faye Karna):  We Ryder folks were able to provide some news to the Norweigan cousin of the former Ole and Knute Meland. They had lived in the Ryder area during the 1930-40's. If you readers recall anymore, please let Sue know at sbradley@restel.com. He really appreciated what we could send back to him and even wants to visit Ryder in future.

Now, we are looking into former blacksmith people other than the Stueflats.  We have gained lots of info on them and have a great display in the museum regarding John Stueflat's blacksmith work while in Ryder.  Can you recall others that carried
on that occupation in the area? One being questioned is Max Barlow. He supposedly lived east of Ryder where he did his work.  He had 2 sons named Walt and Ervin.  Does that cause a recall to any of you readers?  How about others that had their shops in Ryder and in Ryder area?  If you want to send recalls to Sue, that is great or send on to Faye at fkarna25@gmail.com or 701-509-5137.  This will be collected for the museum.

The Ryder Community Food Pantry very much appreciates Coltyn and Logan for all their help at the Pantry. These boys are always available to help when needed!

Ron and Muriel Peterson went to Bismarck, Wednesday as Muriel had an appointment with a dermatologist. They met Sharon Franklin and Faye Karna for lunch before she saw the doctor.
On Saturday they went to Max to the funeral for Palmer Lindlauf, an elementary school friend of Muriel’s. She visited with many friends and relatives.

Rondi and Steve Deaver and their boys are among a baseball team of twelve 12 year olds and their parents who went to Omaha, Nebraska for a tournament. The teams are from all over the U.S. So far, the Minot team has won the games they have played. There are 650 teams of boys from ages 9-12 or 13. The rains have been a problem so they may all be going home sooner than planned!

Alex and Kelsey DesRoches with Kallie Jo and Kirby Jean

Congratulations to Alex and Kelsey DesRoches who are the proud parents of KIRBY JEAN born on 6/19/19, weighing 8 lbs 13 oz and 20” long.  She was welcomed home by her big sister, Kallie Jo, who is going to be a big helper!   Grandparents are Jody and Peggy Jean Reinisch and Lorn and Corrina DesRoches of Minot.  Kallie Jo got to spend a few days with Grampa, Gramma and Uncle Josh which was LOTS OF FUN!!!

Shelsey Brandvold’s 1st place Ribbon in 4-H Achievement Days Exhibit

Stetson Brandvold’s 1st Place Ribbon in 4-H Achievement Days Exhibit

Shelsey and Stetson Brandvold did well on their 4-H Achievement Days Static Exhibits this past week.  Shelsey received a Grand Champion on her picture from a frosty morning leaving Church, she snapped a few pictures of the road to the elevator.  Stetson took a bunch of pictures when his mom and dad were chopping corn. He put together a picture collage and received an Outstanding.  Both kids took a few projects and were happy with the results. Off to the State Fair in July.

I finished up my radiation treatments, all 15 of them, on June 13th. I had been cancer free for over a year and then my last PET scan showed a nickel sized spot on a lymph node between my right kidney and my liver. The Dr. told me that the radiation should take care of it. He also said that these treatments can make you tired and he was right about that.

Ryder News for June 20, 2019

Hope all the dads, grandpas and stepdads out there in reader land had a great Father’s Day.

Mystery Photo
No one even ventured a guess as to last week’s mystery photo, but I will admit it was a hard one. Alvin Magandy was the little boy’s name and he is the son of Grace and Don Magandy
This week we have a new mystery photo and he lived in the Ryder area, now deceased. He had 2 children. Who wants to venture a guess as to who he is?

I am so sick of wood ticks..it seems that I have one on me at least every other day if not every day. My dogs all have collars to kill them and I put tick medicine on my cat but they are still finding me. Maybe I should have a collar on too! It might be my long-haired cat that is the guilty wood tick carrier. They probably get on his long hair and when they see me coming, they leap at me. Ugh!

John and Johnny McGrath with Johnny’s catch of the day!

John, Staci and Johnny McGrath went fishing last Friday and Johnny caught this big northern. He was so excited that he could barely talk. Staci took a video of them bringing it in and after taking a picture, they let it go. Congratulations Johnny!

Had some rain showers around our area last week, my rain gauge showed a total of .78 of an inch for the 3 day period, some got less and some got more along with hail. No hail at my place though which was good as I had just planted some flowers and I also had left my car sitting outside!

Ryder sure has been making the news lately and not in a good way! First it was the murder/suicide in the Ryder Star bar and on Main St., now there was a man killed in SUV/pedestrian accident last Thursday. Ricky Finley, 23, of Minot was struck and killed on Highway 28, 3 miles south of Ryder. He was a passenger in a van that was stopped along the shoulder of the road. When some passengers got out of the van, a dog got loose and Finley was chasing the dog when he was struck by a southbound car. There are no charges pending and the driver of the car was not injured. The accident happened in rainy conditions at about 10:30 p.m.

Parshall has been having its share of bad luck as well with an ATV accident at Parshall Bay last week resulting in 2 young men being injured, one severely with his arm almost detached. He is now in a Minnesota hospital recovering from his injuries. They were able to save his arm thanks to the quick thinking of some bystanders who witnessed the accident, fashioned a tourniquet and called 911.  And to the doctors at Trinity who performed surgery on his arm to place a stent to keep blood flowing into the arm. Then he was life flighted to a Minnesota hospital. The other young man was taken to a different hospital and is recovering from his non-life threatening injuries. Then I see that there was a motorcycle accident south of Parshall which took the life of 69 year old Larry Snyder. It looks like the accidents have already started this time of year for ATV and motorcycles. Everyone needs to be careful and take care when you are driving one of these vehicles and others need to keep your eyes open and watch out for them to avoid any more accidents.

Myron Lahti buried his oldest son, Bernard (Bernie) in Ryder’s Rosehill cemetery last Friday afternoon.

Attendees at Max Cossacks Basketball Camp in Max.

Some of the kids that attended the Max Cossacks Basketball Camp in Max this last week were: Ethan Hagan, Kendall Janz, Stetson Brandvold, Brianna Liefson, Carson Rockwell, Isaac Sherven and Alivia Sherven.  Everyone received a T-shirt.  There were awards after the 3 day camp, which all these kids brought home one or more. What a fun week was had by all.

Cash Petersen, Ryder’s young motorcycle rider.

Tony Petersen’s son Cash, who is a young motorcycle rider from Ryder is heading to the Nationals motorcycle competition in Tennessee at the end of July. Good luck Cash!
