Ryder News Sep 7, 2017

Ryder News for Sept. 7, 2017

Our son Rick and grandson Levi came to visit Saturday evening. Levi had lots to eat, Doritos, cookies, and a popsicle, then he played with his Legos for a while and then it was time to go home. He had to have a popsicle for home! That’s what we do around here, sugar them up and send them home!

I had a CT scan and it came back normal, so did my mammogram and then I had a PET scan which looks for cancer. Well, this time mine came back with no cancer activity on my tumors and no new cancer. God is good and prayers work. I am still on chemo and cancer pills as it seems that my tumors are shrinking...Yay! Maybe someday I will be declared totally free of cancer and can quit with the chemo and pills. I still have after effects from having shingles. I have swelling on my arm pit and also left lower abdominal wall. Wish it would go away as it is bugging me. I heard that it could last for a year or longer.

It is almost Makoti Threshing Show time. Where does the time go, it’s too early for fall to be right around the corner. The threshing show is earlier this year, they moved it up to the last weekend in September which is the 23rd and 24th this year. Lots of activity, hustle and bustle on the grounds as everyone is getting machinery, tractors etc. ready to go. Tractor trek from Makoti to Ryder will be Friday Sept. 22nd. You can find more information on both the website and Facebook page. Of course this means that I have to get up early to get pictures of the Tractor Trek, ugh I hate to get up early!!

There is also a general meeting of the Makoti Threshers at the Makoti Senior Center on Thursday Sept. 14 at 7 p.m. to discuss final preparations for the show on the 23rd and 24th.

For ages 5-19...Are you looking to join a 4-H group. The Ward County 4-H groups that are local are the Rocky Acres 4-H and the Prairie Ryder's 4-H. Contact Julie Brandvold @ 701-758-2456 or Sue Williams @ 701-743-4184 for more information. Great opportunities! Join today!

Kids on playground at the old Ryder school.
Lots of kids play at the old Ryder school playground as long as the weather is nice. The Community Club held a fundraiser last year to update the swings, etc. and David Kimball painted and installed new swing seats, etc.

The Ryder Community Center has this to say, “We had a fantastic turn out for BINGO! last Friday! The black out pot is still there! Don’t forget the Ryder Community Club in your donations. We have a huge project to get done, to help lower our electric bill and we are gonna need all the help we can get!!! We appreciate all for your support!!! We sure don’t want to lose our community center!!

The Ryder Community Food Pantry opens at 10 a.m. on Saturday Sept. 9th. Come visit and stock up!

June 1951 Blue Hill News by Mamie Olson

It’s been many moons since we Blue Hillites have seen so much rain fall during a few hours period. Tuesday afternoon it starting showering but towards evening the showers became downpours which continued until the wee hours of the morning hours on Wednesday. It was accompanied by a very severe electrical storm which continued through the night. The rain gauges thru the community showed from 3 to 4 inches of rain. It was a rain long to be remembered. On Thursday afternoon, a quick heavy shower on .75 fell south of Blue Hill in the Ervin Hopkins vicinity.  Who needs rainmakers? We Blue Hillites fully believe that we just need natural rainfall as the old saying goes. “If it rains on June 1st, we’ll have twenty one days of rain in June.” So far, six out of seven, not bad.

On Sunday, June 3rd, Robert Landon, one of our local young farmers, was married to Doris Price of rural Douglas. As yet I have no further details. They will be at home on the Landon farm, after a short trip.

Mr. and Mrs. Wendell Hanson and Marlene and Mr. Olaf Hanson and Maureen went to Riverdale Sunday to see Mrs. Olaf Hansen who still remains a hospital patient.

Mr. and Mrs. Joe Linnertz of Williston spent Saturday evening at the Ed Olsons.

Mrs. Just Mulnaa remains a hospital patient at Minot but her condition is improving after a light stroke.

Mrs. O.K. Hopkins, who underwent major surgery on Thursday May 31st, is getting along and is expected home from the Trinity hospital at Minot today, June 7th.

Mr. and Mrs. Peterson together with Mr. and Mrs. Floyd Peterson of Pray, Montana motored to Sheridan, Wyoming where they attended the Purebred Hereford Sale. Enroute to Pray, Montana June 1st, they drove thru snow a foot deep near Big Timber, Montana with a real blizzard raging.

Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Semmert of Waterloo, Iowa, came on Sunday to visit with the former’s sister, Mrs. O.K. Hopkins and family for a few days.
