Ryder News for Feb. 9, 2017
The groundhogs that I interviewed. |
Boy, what a week I had! I went out scouting for
groundhogs...one in particular named Phil. Well, I came across 3 of them but
not a one would admit that their name was Phil nor would they tell me where
they came from...of course that may have been due to the hatchet I had in my
hand. Oh well, I will keep on looking and in the meantime, enjoy the next 4-6
inches of snow they are forecasting!
Snow plow on Highway 23 cleaning the roads after last week’s
snow storm
|
Rod and Kathy (Kronbach) Kallestad of Garrison travelled to
Minot last Saturday via Ryder and stopped at their farm north of Ryder to check
on the farm cats. The roads were horrible with compacted snow and ice. They met
a snow plow on Highway 23, so it was nice to see the highways were being worked
on. Thank you to those people who do that for a living. They enjoyed supper
with the kids at Jenny (Blowers) and Kyle Brossart's and Kylie, with Cindy
(Olson), Wil, Henry, and Lucy Oberdick, and Steven Olson, all of Minot, joining
them. Rod and Kathy spent the night at the Brossart's and headed home on Sunday
afternoon with the roads being perfectly free of moisture -- ice or snow!
Please take note: There will be a Free Will Benefit
Breakfast for the Ryder-Makoti Fire Dept. and First Responders. This will be
held on Sunday, Feb. 19 from 8:30 - 1:00 at the Ryder Community Center/Gym.
Sponsored by the Old Ryder Jaycees.
Kenny and I took in the Bingo games on Friday night with me
managing to win a couple of times but had to split my winnings. Needless to
say, I probably broke even for the evening. Staci, John and Johnny also came out
to play and that Johnny is a pretty good player as he started playing 2 single
cards. He came so close to winning several times and was rather disappointed
when he didn’t win. Oh well, that’s the luck of the game!
We got to visit with several friends and I sure hope that
none of us catch this crud and also the flu that is going around. It sounds
like there are quite a few around the area that either are sick or have been
sick. Cross your fingers for us as neither one of us can afford to get sick
right now!
BINGO NEWS:
Kathy Kimball says, “We had fun at Bingo Friday night!! The
big Pot did not go out...so it is up to $970.00!!! Hope to see you on March 3rd for our next
BINGO, or the first Friday of March!”
The Ryder Community Food Pantry, serving Makoti, Ryder,
Plaza and Roseglen area, will be open the 2nd and 4th Saturday this month from
11 a.m to 1 p.m. Hopefully the weather will behave. A BIG THANK YOU to P.J. for
stepping in the last weekend the pantry was open, because Kathy’s roads were
not passable.
The Ryder Historical Society received another obituary that
will be added to their 2016 binder. It was of Gerald “Jack” Erb who died on
September 25, 2016. Jack was a son of Clayton and Laura Peterson Erb and was
born in Ryder in 1932. After attending
Ryder High, he entered the Navy where he retired as a Chief Petty Officer after
20 years. He was an “Atomic Veteran” as he witnessed the first hydrogen bomb
test in the Marshall Islands. Jerry served several tours to Korea and Vietnam
as well as the Six Days War in the Middle East. He was a Navy recruiter from
1963-67 and then began a 25 year career with the US Postal Office. He is
survived by his wife of 63 years and 2 sons. Survivors also include his sisters
Olive Boots and Shirley Schieve of Minot, ND and Sheryl and husband Jeff Tolson
of CA. Their one daughter, Lorene, and one of their sons, Gerald, are deceased
as well as brother, Dale Erb and sister, Joyce Erb DeWitz.
Sheryl Erb Tolson sent the Ryder museum a picture of her
father, Clayton Erb, from 1963. It shows him standing beside the blade he drove
for Ward County. He not only did county roads but townships hired him to do
theirs also. Been said he knew how to do a good job! I am sure you older
readers remember Clayton out on those roads and remember him and Laura from the
earlier Ryder days. This picture will be mounted and added to a picture binder
in the museum. Thanks, Sheryl, for
submitting an important former part of Ryder’s history! If there are other
families out there in Reader-Land who would like to submit former pictures of
Ryder history, please do so as it would add so much to the museum’s records
value.
It looks like I am going to have radiation in my lymph nodes
under my left arm. My PET scan was fabulous with everything looking to be
stable and the Dr. was shocked when this showed up. He said my type of cancer
was not supposed to move into the lymph nodes like that. Well, guess what...it
did. So hopefully the radiation will knock it out and that I won’t get too sick
from it!
I guess this is about the end of the fascinating news for
this week so we will head into the Old News that so many of you like to read
and look for names that you recognize!
Old Roseglen News by Mrs. Earl Pederson. This will be a
continuation of the Successful March of Dimes Party.
