Ryder News Feb. 23, 2016

Ryder News for Feb. 23, 2017

Phil the groundhog relaxing off Key West.

Back to Phil the groundhog story...when I said he would be put on the back burner for a while as it was income tax season I got to thinking that maybe the back burner on the stove, skinned, cleaned, and in a pot of boiling water! I just found out that he lied to everyone about how much winter is left, then he skips town two days later….Someone grabbed this photo of him down in Key West.  So I guess we can just leave him down there and enjoy the nice weather while we have it. I am sure it will end eventually!

I saw my radiologist for 3 hours yesterday (Wednesday). He is such a nice Dr. and I think this is going to be a good and successful partnership. He said this is one of the best places for the cancer to be as there is nothing by it that radiation will damage. I got measured and tattooed and went into a ct machine, had pictures taken and had an air mold made for me to lay on when I have the radiation. I will have 15 treatments, one per day for 3 weeks and then another 5 treatments later on. He figured it should be fairly easy to kill this. Yay. I don't have my schedule yet but will find out in 5-10 days.  I am feeling pretty upbeat about this.

Cash Petersen after winning 2nd place in his motocross race in Minneapolis this weekend.

Tony Petersen said that his son Cashtyn took 2nd in the KTM challenge in the Supercross this last week in Minneapolis, Minn.

There was  a small get together with some graduates of Ryder High School at the winter home of Ronnie and Muriel Peterson.  Those that attended were from left to right: Ronald Larson, Dwight Paulson, Roger Ree, Mike Haugen, Ronald Peterson, Muriel Streeper Peterson, LeRoy Peterson and Sandra Morris Peterson.

Dwight Paulson says, “We had a small get together with some graduates of Ryder High School at the winter home of Ronnie and Muriel Peterson. Those that attended were from left to right: Ronald Larson, Dwight Paulson, Roger Ree, Mike Haugen, Ronald Peterson, Muriel Streeper Peterson, LeRoy Peterson and Sandra Morris Peterson.”

The following is a letter to the RYDER COMMUNITY.
Ryder housing is in desperate need of Housing Board Members!!! Over the years we have had difficulty getting folks to volunteer to be a member. We have 3 members but need 5. If we do not get any interest, the 4-plex might have to be sold! This would affect Ryder residents as well as out of town residents who need an affordable place to live.
If someone else buys the building, we do not know who they would rent to, or what they would charge for rent, or if it would be shut down completely.
Please help us keep our Ryder Housing locally owned.
Call: Harlan Skarphol at 758-2429 or Carey Larson at 758-2292.

Dwight Paulson had dinner with home town friends at the Organ Stop Pizza in Mesa, AZ last week. The largest pipe organ in the world was there, 6,000 pipes. Am spending time with Ron and Muriel Peterson. They are both classmates and I stay with them on the farm when I go home to Ryder, ND. On Friday night several more classmates will join us for cook out. I am so thankful for all the fine friends I keep getting to spend time with.

Old Roseglen News:  I sure have been receiving some nice phone calls and emails regarding this old time news. My readers of that era love it...I hope I don’t run out before Faye Karna gets back as she is the one that feeds it to me!

“Following the program many tried their luck in the Cake Walk on the stage, to the tune of 10 cents per walk, which continued until every cake had walked away with it’s proud winner!
The women who served on the lunch program were kept busy doling out chili burgers, hot dogs, cake and hot coffee until the wee hours of the morning.
Winner of the Door Prize, the baby beef, was Eddie Varty of Makoti. The Shetland pony was by 8 week old Julie Zimmerman, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Dale Zimmerman of Emmet. The sheep was won by Edmund Iverson of Emmet. 10 acres of aerial spray went to Darwin Vangsness of Roseglen and 5 bushels of Durum was won by Leonard Kolden of Roseglen.”

Another letter from the Fan Corner:

“Hi Sue,
I just had to write to tell you how much I’ve enjoyed your last two weeks of “groundhog” updates. I literally laughed out loud when I read them. When we lived in Pennsylvania, I lived in hope that Phil wouldn’t see his shadow. I was closer than you and couldn’t get him so unlikely you stood a chance.
Sorry to hear about your diagnosis. I hope the radiation will be successful.
Still Chuckling, Marian Lehnherr – My parents, Darwin and Claryce Johnson, used to own the Red Owl Store in Garrison.”

Thanks for writing Marian...I enjoy receiving letters from my readers, especially if they like what I have written!

As far as chasing groundhogs...I guess that will be put on the backburner for this year as income tax season is here so that’s my next project.

“Jr” Stanley G. Maeshiro II, 46, from Makoti, ND passed away Friday, Feb. 3, 2017 in a Minot hospital. There will be a Celebration of Life on Saturday, Feb. 18, 2017 at 5 p.m. at the Makoti Senior Hall in Makoti.

Karen Dockter and her awesome quilt.

The quilting ladies (Lynn Heald, Karen Dockter, Diane Slickers, Sharleen Larson and of course Judi) got together again, gathering at Judi Green’s home. Susan Melgaard came to visit and did a little hand stitching.

Karen Dockter has been working on a quilt for 17 years. It is an awesome 4,356 one and a half inch squares, and some squares were half square triangles meaning two pieces of fabric made the inch and a half square. Size was 100 x 100 inches. Karen said it took two years to cut the fabric. Note the pattern, Light to dark, Dark to light.

Sharleen said, “We so enjoy these Retreats. Just sew. Of course we all take breaks to check our email and Facebook!
This is about the sixth time we have gone to Judi's. I had hosted before but Judi has more space. We gathered last November, now in February and will again in April then probably not until late Fall. We all take turns bringing one meal.  Good friends. Great memories!”

Kathy and Dave Kimball spent Friday evening in Minot watching their grandson, Tristan Kimball, play basketball along with their kids Amanda and Joe McCallum, Caleb, Aspen, Autumn, Colton, Crystal Cree, Ean, Avery, Matayah, Eric and Laurie. G'ma and G'pa took Matayah and Autumn home for the weekend. They helped G'ma with the pantry (which by the way needs donations immediately) and soup and sandwich social. They also sledded and G'pa drove them around in the country in their trak truck. The girls also attended church at St. John's Lutheran church in Ryder with their grandparents.

The Food Pantry was a huge success this Saturday, which means they are low on food and stuff. They have food donation totes at the Ryder Gym, the Ryder Post Office, the Ryder Town and Country Credit Union, the Grocery store in Plaza or if you would rather donate money, you can send it to the Town and Country Credit Union or to the Ryder Food Pantry,  P. O. Box 61,  Ryder, ND 58779 or you can call Kathy at 701-578-5876.  If you know someone in need please write, text, or call her.  We sincerely appreciate all of you who donate and know how important it is to keep our Food Pantry going!

Ryder News Feb. 9, 2017

Ryder News for Feb. 9, 2017

The groundhogs that I interviewed.
Boy, what a week I had! I went out scouting for groundhogs...one in particular named Phil. Well, I came across 3 of them but not a one would admit that their name was Phil nor would they tell me where they came from...of course that may have been due to the hatchet I had in my hand. Oh well, I will keep on looking and in the meantime, enjoy the next 4-6 inches of snow they are forecasting!

Snow plow on Highway 23 cleaning the roads after last week’s snow storm
Rod and Kathy (Kronbach) Kallestad of Garrison travelled to Minot last Saturday via Ryder and stopped at their farm north of Ryder to check on the farm cats. The roads were horrible with compacted snow and ice. They met a snow plow on Highway 23, so it was nice to see the highways were being worked on. Thank you to those people who do that for a living. They enjoyed supper with the kids at Jenny (Blowers) and Kyle Brossart's and Kylie, with Cindy (Olson), Wil, Henry, and Lucy Oberdick, and Steven Olson, all of Minot, joining them. Rod and Kathy spent the night at the Brossart's and headed home on Sunday afternoon with the roads being perfectly free of moisture -- ice or snow!

Please take note: There will be a Free Will Benefit Breakfast for the Ryder-Makoti Fire Dept. and First Responders. This will be held on Sunday, Feb. 19 from 8:30 - 1:00 at the Ryder Community Center/Gym. Sponsored by the Old Ryder Jaycees.

Kenny and I took in the Bingo games on Friday night with me managing to win a couple of times but had to split my winnings. Needless to say, I probably broke even for the evening. Staci, John and Johnny also came out to play and that Johnny is a pretty good player as he started playing 2 single cards. He came so close to winning several times and was rather disappointed when he didn’t win. Oh well, that’s the luck of the game!
We got to visit with several friends and I sure hope that none of us catch this crud and also the flu that is going around. It sounds like there are quite a few around the area that either are sick or have been sick. Cross your fingers for us as neither one of us can afford to get sick right now!

BINGO NEWS:
Kathy Kimball says, “We had fun at Bingo Friday night!! The big Pot did not go out...so it is up to $970.00!!!  Hope to see you on March 3rd for our next BINGO, or the first Friday of March!”
The Ryder Community Food Pantry, serving Makoti, Ryder, Plaza and Roseglen area, will be open the 2nd and 4th Saturday this month from 11 a.m to 1 p.m. Hopefully the weather will behave. A BIG THANK YOU to P.J. for stepping in the last weekend the pantry was open, because Kathy’s roads were not passable.

The Ryder Historical Society received another obituary that will be added to their 2016 binder. It was of Gerald “Jack” Erb who died on September 25, 2016. Jack was a son of Clayton and Laura Peterson Erb and was born in Ryder in 1932.  After attending Ryder High, he entered the Navy where he retired as a Chief Petty Officer after 20 years. He was an “Atomic Veteran” as he witnessed the first hydrogen bomb test in the Marshall Islands. Jerry served several tours to Korea and Vietnam as well as the Six Days War in the Middle East. He was a Navy recruiter from 1963-67 and then began a 25 year career with the US Postal Office. He is survived by his wife of 63 years and 2 sons. Survivors also include his sisters Olive Boots and Shirley Schieve of Minot, ND and Sheryl and husband Jeff Tolson of CA. Their one daughter, Lorene, and one of their sons, Gerald, are deceased as well as brother, Dale Erb and sister, Joyce Erb DeWitz.

Sheryl Erb Tolson sent the Ryder museum a picture of her father, Clayton Erb, from 1963. It shows him standing beside the blade he drove for Ward County. He not only did county roads but townships hired him to do theirs also. Been said he knew how to do a good job! I am sure you older readers remember Clayton out on those roads and remember him and Laura from the earlier Ryder days. This picture will be mounted and added to a picture binder in the museum.  Thanks, Sheryl, for submitting an important former part of Ryder’s history! If there are other families out there in Reader-Land who would like to submit former pictures of Ryder history, please do so as it would add so much to the museum’s records value.

It looks like I am going to have radiation in my lymph nodes under my left arm. My PET scan was fabulous with everything looking to be stable and the Dr. was shocked when this showed up. He said my type of cancer was not supposed to move into the lymph nodes like that. Well, guess what...it did. So hopefully the radiation will knock it out and that I won’t get too sick from it!

I guess this is about the end of the fascinating news for this week so we will head into the Old News that so many of you like to read and look for names that you recognize!

Old Roseglen News by Mrs. Earl Pederson. This will be a continuation of the Successful March of Dimes Party.

Ryder News Feb. 2, 2017

Ryder News for Feb. 2, 2017

Oops, breaking news...I made a mistake on a date in the Upcoming Events section of the news last week! Shame on me! Bingo is the first Friday of every month, weather permitting...so it will be Feb. 3rd at the Ryder Community Center/Gym starting at 7 p.m.

Kenny was called in early to dialysis this past Thursday morning altho he did go in a little later than they wanted him to. He said the roads were so terrible that he only drove between 30-40 mph. Of course, there were a few idiots that were passing but most of the vehicles stayed behind him and he opted to stay behind the snow plow! At times he had to gauge where he was on the road by the rumble strips. Sure am glad that I didn’t have to drive in and stayed home instead!

There are lots of deer, around 30-50, across the road east from our place, they go there to feed and rest. There have been a few hit so I would suggest caution when driving Highway 28 past Ryder.

Bailey Upgren with her first deer this fall.

Bailey Upgren, daughter of Mike and Melissa (Haugen) Upgren of Bismarck, got her first deer this fall during the youth season. She is the granddaughter of Roger and Kay Haugen of Des Lacs and Ted and Kay (Hofstad) Upgren of Bismarck. Roger Haugen and Kay Hofstad attended Ryder High together and now are related through the marriage of their children.

This year Joan Petrick and 6 Close-Up kids (the 2017 group) from the small town of Plaza, ND went to Washington, DC to take in the Trump Inauguration thanks to the close-up program. Those attending were Justus Bangen, Janene Peterson, London Schlick, Tori Wold, Jayden Anderson and Haylee Rustad.
Joan Petrick is the students’ American Government (social studies) teacher. These 6 kids got to witness history in the making up close and personal! She said they did see some protests and some people that were unhappy with what was happening but for the most part it was peaceful.

Our sympathy goes out to the family and friends of 81 year old Lyle Bradley a long time rancher in the Rice Lake area. Lyle passed away Monday, Jan. 23. 2017 at the Good Shepherd Home in Watford City, ND.

Cash Petersen flying through the air during his race.

Cash Petersen taking a break from motorcycle riding.

Last year Tony Petersen entered his son, Cash into a random pick drawing to participate in the KTM Jr sx challenge during the intermission of a Supercross race. Luckily, Cash got picked to race in Minneapolis on Feb. 18th. He will get to hang out with the big name motocross riders and get to race on the same track as them. If he wins the race on Feb. 18 he would then get invited to race the main national race in Las Vegas, NV in Oct. Let's all cheer our local Ryder, ND kid on and if you want to watch, they show some clips during the race on FS1 Fox Sports network on Feb. 18th during the race. Cash is only 7 years old but does have a birthday coming up pretty soon. He already has a lot of races under his belt and a lot of trophies in his room!

Pat and Joyce McKenzie were visitors and coffee guests of Marlys and Wendell Hanson in Minot on Monday, the 23rd at Brentmoor Assisted Living. Pat and Joyce really enjoyed their visit with them! They have such a nice, cozy apt. They looked well and are doing fine this winter. She said, they have been lucky so far, not to even get a sniffle, as so many others have been ill!

Minot State University just released their President’s List on Jan. 13, 2017. A total of 439 undergraduate students were named to the fall semester President’s List of 2016 at Minot State University according to President Steven W. Shirley. To be named to the MSU President’s List, students must earn a grade point average of at least 3.8 for the semester and complete a minimum of 12 hours of instruction.
The city of Makoti must be very proud of one of their own as Tessa Walters made the List! She is the daughter of Leslie Walters and the late Marty Walters. Congratulations Tessa!!

"Bird woman of Enumclaw" Cindy Mueller holding a squatting finch.

Cindy Mueller or as she was better known for this picture..."bird woman of Enumclaw" said they were just outside the lodge at the top of Crystal Mountain Ski Resort when this Squatting Finch bird decided to squat! How exciting is that!

Old Roseglen News by Mrs. Earl Pederson
This is a continuation of the successful March of Dimes Party:

“There were ten townships which took part and  much credit is due for the wonderful work that was done by the Chairman and co-chairman of each township, and their wives. It is a tremendous job and a big responsibility for these committees, but a very gratifying one when the results turn out so wonderfully well as they did here.
Roseglen township was headed by Mr. and Mrs. Maurice Snippen, Mr. and Mrs. Kenneth Hill, and Mr. and Mrs. Vernon Hanson; Deepwater -- Mr. and Mrs. Wes Cumings, Jr. and Mr. and Mrs. Wm Albrecht; Blackwater -- Mr. and Ms. Lloyd Klabunde, Cramerville -- Mr. and Mrs. Ivan Avery and Mr. and Mrs.Weldon Hendrickson; Romsaas -- Mr. and Mrs. Royce Hill and Mr. and Mrs. Duane Zimmerman; Blue Hill -- Mr. and Mrs. Ray Bofenkamp and Wayne Hanson; Gate -- Mr. and Mrs.Walter Hanson and Mr. and Mrs. Warren Cummings; Amundsville -- Mr. and Mrs. Lynn Garnas, Mr. and Mrs. Albert Jorgenson, and Mr. and Mrs. Richard Hauge; Lucky Mound -- Mr. and Mrs. Herman Muhlbradt Jr. and Ziegler Township--Mr. and Mrs. Tony Matthews.”
