Ryder News Feb. 25, 2016

Ryder News for Feb. 25, 2016

Not much news for this week so of course I will add a little of the Blue Hill News!

We have had a lot of fog the last few days so I hate to see what the weather will be bringing later on. The old wives’ tale that I had always heard was that we would get moisture 3 days after a fog and if it didn’t come in 3 days then it would be in 30, 60 or 90 days. Hmmm. Of course my mother always said, “All signs fail in a dry year.” So I am wondering what we are going to get for moisture…any thoughts?

We’ve been having that nice mild weather again and even if we do get an inch or so of snow every once in a while, it disappears within a day or so. I see that the gravel trucks are making a lot of fevered trips to get the rocks hauled out of the fields before it gets too wet for them to get in and out.

I have an update on Ross Sherven…he had surgery this morning (Sunday) in Minneapolis. It seems that due to his coughing so much after his open heart surgery, his incision just isn’t healing and kept pulling apart and bleeding. I believe he was to have plastic surgery to replace his sternum. Keep him in your thoughts and prayers!

I visited with Kathy Kimball this morning (Sunday) and she told me that she is making beef stew and homemade buns and bread for the lunch at the Ryder Community Center/ Gym on Saturday Feb. 27th. This is a free luncheon sponsored by the Ryder Senior Citizens and served from 11 to 3 every 2nd and 4th Saturday of the month.

Severance Valentine’s Day calf.
Sally Severance posted an interesting picture of her Valentine calf on Facebook and I asked to reprint it here in my news and here is what she had to say about it: “In 2013 we sold our Charolais herd (all but the yearlings) to a guy in Missouri. Last summer the guy called us and told us that he was going to disperse our herd because he had an offer on his land that he couldn't refuse. Jan and I headed to Missouri with a semi and cattle pot and bought some of the cows back. Well....they were all supposed to be bred back to a Charolais bull. The day the cow started labor we put her in the west barn. After a short amount of time I told Randy to go check on her. He texted us a picture with a message saying, "well, this is interesting". So, we'll just send some hair samples in and have the calf DNA'd to see who the daddy is.  It is a boy and he was born on Valentine’s Day. The following day after he was born his momma had licked his face so his hair was spiked! He's certainly a standout among all the rest of the Charolais and Angus.”

Wind and more wind Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday and this Friday morning.  It is still blowing pretty strong, with temperature at only 42 above. Is summer never going to come? After several days of wind, a good rain would be welcome to settle the dust. Farmers are getting well along with their belated field work. Farmers have seeded their wheat as planned, hoping for a good season.

Not many country folks went into Ryder on Tuesday for Memorial Day due to the weather. Ed Peterson and Roy, Mrs. Harry Peterson and Darlene, and Mrs. Paul Sorenson went to Minot and to Rose Hill cemetery.

Mr. and Mrs. Carl Olson, Mr. and Mrs. Ray Olson and children, Mr. and Mrs. Jess Baxter were supper guests at Ed Olsons Memorial Day, the occasion being Mr. Olson’s 81st birthday. Later in the evening, Mr. and Mrs. Harry Peterson, Don and Darlene visited there with Mrs. Peterson bringing a big birthday cake.

Barbara, Vernon, Diana, Shirley and Donnie Linnertz are attending Parochial school at the Catholic Church in Ryder for two weeks.

Mr. and Mrs. Carl Olson have enjoyed the visit of Mrs. Olson’s brother, Jess Baxter and wife, who have traveled all over the U.S. the last three years, having visited every state but Maine. Three years ago they spent the winter in Florida, the last two in California. The Baxters have a large trailer house which is their home. They are on their way to Minneapolis for the summer with plans to spend next winter in Arizona.

Mrs. Harry Peterson and Darlene visited at Paul Sorenson’s Monday afternoon.

Ryder News Feb. 18, 2016

Ryder News for Feb. 18, 2016

Not a lot of news for this week. I hope everyone had a great Valentine’s Day. Kenny did get me chocolates (I knew he would) and then I fixed him a nice shrimp dinner. We rent to Minot to deliver valentines to the McGrath family and we got more candy.

Joyce and Pat McKinzie, were afternoon coffee guests of Wendell and Marlys Hanson in Minot, last Thursday Feb. 4th.  They a nice visit with them and they both are doing very well. They like it where there at and always keep busy with something.

Lee, Julie, Shelsey and Stetson Brandvold came to Joyce and Pat McKinzies on Friday night the 29th of January and stayed overnight as Lee and Julie and Dave and Denae Anderson took in the Big Fishing Derby down in Devils Lake on Saturday the 30th. Joyce said they enjoyed having the grandkids all day on Saturday. It was such a beautiful day, that they all were outside for about 2 hrs. The grandkids are getting pretty big now so they can help Grandpa and Grandma with things. The fishermen got skunked as none of them caught any fish. There were a lot of prizes given away and they didn't win any of those either. They said it was fun anyway and they may go again next year.

I decided to meander down to the Ryder Community Center/Gym and have the soup and sandwich that they serve every 2nd and 4th Saturdays of the week. This time Kathy Kimball had homemade chicken noodle soup and it was delicious. The soup was enough to fill a person up, nice and thick so I decided I didn’t need the sandwich!

Well, even if I don’t have any more news for this week, Mamie Olson does, so here is another excerpt from her Blue Hill News column courtesy of Faye Karna and the Ryder Museum…enjoy.

Ryder News Feb. 11, 2016

Ryder News for Feb. 11, 2016

HAPPY VALENTINE’S DAY!! Have your sweetie take you out for a wonderful meal and then shower you with chocolates when you get home. I am assuming that is what Kenny is going to do for me.
Gravel Products loading up a rock pile.

Gigantic rock pile being formed for later use in road projects.

If anyone has been wondering what those great big Gravel Products semis are doing running up and down the roads either full of huge rocks or empty, I have the answer. They have been busy in the surrounding farmer’s fields loading up their rock piles and hauling them to a gigantic rock pile they are building over by Jamie Johansen’s place. They are being stockpiled for future roadwork that is supposed to be coming this spring. I, being the ace reporter that I am, managed to get a few pictures to share with my readers.

The Senior Citizens are preparing to put new flooring in their building and have a pretty decent carpet that they are taking out. If anyone wants a chunk of old carpeting that is in pretty good shape, contact Dave Kimball at 578-5877. This will be taken out on the 13th or 14th so you will have to contact him before that date and pick it up or it will be cut into strips to make it easier to remove.

The Senior Citizens will be putting on a community Corn Beef and Cabbage supper on St. Patrick’s Day, Mar. 17th, starting at 6 p.m. and everyone is welcome. This is a free will offering.

Daniel Starks and Don Vinje
Daniel Starks provided the entertainment for Don Vinje’s 84th Birthday party at The Meadows in Garrison on January 25th. Daniel accompanied himself on his guitar and shared a selection of Gospel favorites and some other fun songs such as “You Are My Sunshine.”

Charlotte Smette is a leap year baby and therefore only has a birthday once every four years. That makes her a heck of a lot younger than a lot of us!! Anyway, this year she actually gets to celebrate her birthday on Feb. 29th so be sure to remind her of her young age and wish her a Happy Birthday when the day rolls around!

It looks like Bingo Day has rolled around again as the first Friday of the month is in a few days, Feb. 5th. Remember bingo is played at the Ryder Community Center/Gym at 7:00 on the first Friday of every month. See you there!

I have my new computer up and running but am still installing programs so have to struggle with this old one to write the news. I still have to get a photo program installed and want to use my old one…have to figure out how to set up my file transfer program. That’s kind of scary as I have all my income tax stuff in this old one and don’t want to mess anything up and lose it!

Here is another installment of the “Blue Hill News” written by Mamie Olson and courtesy of Faye Karna and the Ryder Museum. Remember all mistakes in spelling and punctuation are authentic and not mine for a change!

“May ?, 1950   Blue Hill News by Mamie Olson
Art Landon received a call that he became grandpa to a fine little lady at Jamestown, ND a few days ago when a daughter was born to Mr. and Mrs. Norman Brotten, nee Charlotte Landon.
Roy Peterson has been on the flu sick list this week but is better at this writing.
Mrs. Petrine Folden is nicely settled in her new home in Ryder. Her daughter, Mrs. Linnertz, is still waiting for the roads to get better so Mrs. Linnertz can come and get her from Williston.
Folks, it just isn’t very much news this week due to roads, weather and no telephone. Let’s hope for better conditions next week.

May 25, 1950     Blue Hill News by Mamie Olson
Marking Time: With good weather prevailing throughtout the week, the ground as yet is still not fit in many places for field work. A few farmers have worked high ground. The majority are just marking time, waiting for better conditions.
Jumbo Size: Has anyone ever seen more and bigger crocuses than those in bloom this year?  The prairies are just blue with them. It seems as though they must have been in bloom under the snow.
Mrs. Harry Peterson visited school Tuesday and after took Darlene into Ryder to attend confirmation at St. John’s Lutheran Church.
Rough Winter: If little Diana Folden could have skipped this year entirely, she’d have suffered much less wear and tear. First she became very ill and underwent major surgery for tumors. Then she got the flu. Then she got the three-day measles. Then she got the red measles.  Now she has undergone surgery again, this time to have a fingernail removed because of a bad infection.
New Teacher: Mrs. Si Schellenbaum of Ryder has signed the contract to teach Blue Hill School next year. Mr. Nelson who taught this year will enter the university again this autumn to work on his master’s degree in sociology.
Mr. and Mrs. Nick Linnertz received word that their son, Robert, who is in the navy, has been hospitalized at Boston for six weeks but will soon be back to duty. He has been stationed in Finland for several months.
Mothers Days visitors at Ed Olsons were Mr. and Mrs. Joe Linnertz of Williston, Mrs. Petrine Folden, Mr. and Mrs. Ray Olson of Ryder, Mr. and Mrs. Carl Olson, Mrs. Emma Classon and daughter, Claryce, of Garrison.
Addition: To the names of Blue Hill Township farmers and ranchers should be added the name of John Linnertz and his Linnertz ranch. Chris Linnertz was one of the earliest pioneers of the community and had a big cattle herd. Mr. and Mrs. Christ Linnertz passed away in 1922 and 1929 respectively and John has taken over the reins in both grain and stock and has a big herd of Hereford cattle, some grade and some registered.  He is married to the former Ruby Plaisance of rural Douglas and they have three children: Shirley, Donnie and Allan. Nick Linnertz and family reside on the old George Robbins farm. Nick does chiefly grain farming. Other Linnertz youngsters raised in this community were Carl, now with county highway department at Pasco, Washington, William with Harrington brothers at Minot, Joe with International Harvester at Williston, and Gertrude who is now Mrs. A. Gabe of Taylor.
Mr. and Mrs. Ken Hopkins of Garrison spent Saturday and Sunday at the O.K. Hopkins home.
Blue Hill folks were starting to think, “What, aren’t we going to have a census taker count our noses?” but on Monday Mrs. Ervin Kolden started census operations.
Mr. and Mrs. S.G. Romsaas shopped at Minot Saturday and Sunday were dinner guests of their son Dale and family at Garrison.
Several Blue Hill youngsters have had three day measles and red measles.
Bill Slobojan of Blackwater spent the week-end visiting the Emilia Schmidt home.
Communications: After three weeks of a silent telephone line, men got the line ready for operation again, but the folks further south are still having phone troubles.
Mudder’s Day: Ervin Hopkins is having quite a time with all these bad roads trying to get this assessing done for 15 unorganized townships in McLean County.
Harry Peterson and Don left early Friday morning for Forsyth, Montana, where they expect to purchase some registered Hereford cattle at the earl B. Rice Chromo-Polled Hereford Ranch.  They expect to return home Saturday evening. Andy Reed of Nishu will be employed on the Harry Peterson ranch this summer.”
