Ryder News Jan. 28, 2016

Ryder News for Jan. 28, 2016

I have wonderful reader response to the old news columns from the early 1950’s and written by the late Mamie Olson courtesy of Faye Karna and the Ryder Museum.

Ross Sherven had major by-pass surgery last Friday so let’s keep him in our thoughts and prayers for a speedy recovery.

I have my new computer but haven’t gotten set up all the way yet. It is going to be a totally new experience working with Windows 10 and transferring all my stuff from one computer to the other. Hopefully I can get this old one to run long enough at a time to transfer everything.

Alex Schoenborn playing for Portland Oregon Winterhawks.
Alex Schoenborn, son of Heather (Wohlk) Schoenborn reached his 100 WHL career point New Year’s Eve 2015 playing hockey for the Portland Oregon Winterhawks. Alex is a 3rd round draft pick for the San Jose Sharks in NHL. Heather and Cory were at the Hockey game and say it was pretty exciting! Alex is the grandson of Lydell and Wendy Wohlk and great grandson of Evelyth Wohlk and Mabel Ike.

Evelyth Wohlk celebrates her 97th birthday.
Evelyth Wohlk celebrated her 97th birthday New Year’s day with a family meal at the Quinco Community Center in Garrison. The great grandchildren played their annual bingo game. Those present were Clarence, Darci, Julie and Justin Behles; Derrick, Darla, Devan, Dannika and Dillan Rasmussen; Heidi, Dalton and Triston Walsh; Nathan, DelRae, Lanie, Nia, Jetta and Jaeda Wohlk; Lydell and Wendy Wohlk. A friend, Joan stopped by and Gloria Carbojal brought the beautiful birthday cake. Evelyth appreciated all the gifts and birthday cards sent to her.

The following is another segment of the Blue Hill News written in the early ‘50s by Mamie Olson and shared with us via Faye Karna and the Ryder Museum.

“May 1950 can certainly be put on record for its snowfall. Several farmers were entirely out of hay on Friday and Saturday. Bernard Kraft, who has about 50 head of cattle, tells us he didn’t have any hay so had to grind up 100 bushels of wheat to feed to his cattle. Ole Folden was one of the luckier farmers who had hay to divide up with a few of his neighbors to tide them over until the snow melted. Roads were nearly impassable during the week-end and Monday, but the good, North Dakota sun came out in its full power and very little snow was left in short order and roads are drying fast. The school children at Blue Hill could have put this down in their diaries: snowsuits and high rubber boots in May!
The big slough in the school section across from Blue Hill School is full of ducks. Sometimes it seems there’s hardly room for another duck to swim. Not many pheasants are seen around Blue Hill this spring.
Mrs. Carl Anderson and Mrs. Donald Anderson and Donna Mae left Thursday via Great Northern from Minot to spend a week with relatives at Fargo, Barnesville and Pelican Rapids.  Mrs. Donald Anderson will visit especially with her mother, who is ill in Fargo.
Mr. and Mrs. Harry Peterson went to call on Mrs. Jackson Wednesday and bring her some eggs. Mrs. Jackson lives all by herself on her old home place with Mr. Jackson having passed away a year ago. Neighbors try to call on Mrs. Jackson as often as possible and bring her supplies. She gets very lonely as she is unable to get out much, only when a friend goes and takes her along somewhere.
Mrs. Ray Olson, Roxann Fay and Miss Lundahl and Mrs. Ella Benson of Ryder called on Ed Olsons Thursday evening.
Telephone linemen out of Ryder are having an awful time trying to put up poles, straighten tangled and broken wires after the sleet and snow storms of three weeks ago,  Some places can’t be gotten to at all yet because of the water and mud. There has been no telephone service south of Ryder and towards Roseglen for nearly three weeks.
Mrs. Soren Sorenson has had good luck with her early baby chicks in spite of all the snow and cold. She has lost only one out of 300.
The Orrin and Gilbert Johnson families and Ole Johnson have returned to Blue Hill after spending seven month at Sweethome, Oregon where Orrin and Gilbert worked in a lumber mill.”

I sure am finding these old columns interesting and informative; she actually was a very good writer.

   Upcoming Events:

Feb. 1: 12:00 noon. Senior Citizen meal and short business meeting with visiting etc. afterwards at Ryder’s Senior Center. We are still looking for new members…please consider coming for lunch and see what it is all about.

Feb. 5:  7:00 p.m. Bingo at the Ryder Community Center/Gym

Feb. 13: 11:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. Ryder Food and Stuff Pantry and Soup and Sandwich Social at the Ryder Community Center/Gym.

Feb. 27: 11:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. Ryder Food and Stuff Pantry and Soup and Sandwich Social at the Ryder Community Center/Gym.

That’s it for this week. I will be waiting to hear from you with more news items to include in this column. Have a great week.

Ryder News for Jan 21, 2016

Be sure to check your sewer vents during this cold snap we are having with the below zero temps. I noticed that one of ours has a cone of ice built up on it and needs to be removed.

I ordered a new computer for myself as this old one is ready to die on me and I surely need one so I can continue to write this exciting news column. This new computer is coming with Windows 10 and I have been using Windows 7 so I may have a little trouble there. Thank goodness I have a daughter and nephews that are very computer wise and should be able to help me figure stuff out. The computer also comes with detailed instructions for use and a 24/7 help line! Wish me luck!

Here is another little bit of Ryder News from the early 1950’s courtesy of the Ryder Museum and Faye Karna: All spelling mistakes and punctuation are from the actual news column…can’t blame it on me this time!

May 8, 1950  Blue Hill News by Mamie Olson
More snow was dumped on Blue Hill again Friday and Saturday, May 5th and 6th. It just snowed continuously all day and again Monday but since the good old North Dakota sun has been out full time making snow disappear and by tonight, I am sure it will entirely gone. Roads have just been terrible but with everyone trying to get the snow off and blading them, they are all in pretty fair condition again.
Several Blue Hill farmers have had a hard time keeping hay for their cattle, thinking they had plenty hay but with this extra winter, it got to be just too little hay.
Two more students have enrolled at Blue Hill School. They are little Carol and Larry Peterson, children of Mrs. Loraine Peterson, whose farm is up in the NE corner of Blue Hill Township. Due to the distance and road conditions, Mr. and Mrs. Peterson have lived in Minot during the winter so that the children might attend school there.
Mr. and Mrs. Arnold Anderson took their daughter, Bonnie Jean, to a Garrison doctor Wednesday. Bonnie hasn’t felt good for quite some time having the measles and the flu like so many of the children. She was run down and had tonsillitis. We hope the little Miss is back in school Monday.

May 15, 1950  Blue Hill News by Mamie Olson
A cheery Hi to all the readers of this Blue Hill column, new to the Independent. Blue Hill township is five miles south of Ryder in Mc Lean county on a good highway running directly through the middle of the township adjoining with ND 37 that leads to Garrison or Roseglen.  Blue Hill farmers do a great deal of wheat farming (if weather conditions permit).
Also, several farmers have large herds of cattle. One of the farmers who raises Herefords and has a large herd is Harry Peterson, who with his father, Ed, and brother, Roy, farms many quarters of land besides having a large herd of purebred Herefords. Harry also has several riding ponies, including some palominos and some Shetland ponies.
Walter Fiedler, the Witt brothers, B. Kraft, and Otto Brandt have large herds of Hereford cattle on their farms.
There’s a nice consolidated school in the center of the township this being a new school bought and moved to the site in 1949. Blue Hill’s first consolidated school burned in 1917 and then a large brick structure was built with three teaching rooms, a gym and teacherage. But, in 1928 a tornado and hail storm wrecked it. It was repaired so that school was held in the basement until in 1949 when the building near Garrison was bought and moved to the Blue Hill site. The building includes a large classroom, teacherage and gym, a hot air furnace, REA electrical power and modern facilities. Officers of the school board are Nick Linnertz, president; Otto Brandt and Glen Hopkins, directors; and Grant Witt, clerk.
On the township board are Harry Peterson, John C. Hansen, and O.K. Hopkins as supervisors; Ray Bofenkamp, clerk; and Otto E. Brandt, treasurer. The township has built up its roads the last few years and graveled nearly all of the except for short stretches that will be done this year.
Another big improvement in the community is recent years was the building of the REA line through Blue Hill last Autumn. Only six homes remain without electricity.

   Upcoming Events:

   Jan. 24: St. Paul’s Lutheran Church Service 8:00 a.m.; St. John’s Lutheran Church Service 9:30 a.m.; Immanuel Lutheran Church Service 11:00 a.m.

Jan. 23: 5:00 p.m. St. John’s Lutheran Church Service with 6:00 p.m. supper and annual meeting.

Ryder News Jan. 14, 2016

Ryder News for Jan. 14, 2016

Yikes, I think winter has arrived as we now have cold, cold weather with below zero wind chills. So now we are just waiting for that January thaw. Actually the cold weather isn’t supposed to last that long with several warm ups and then cold weather alternating for the next several weeks and…on the bright side…spring isn’t that far away!

I thought for sure that that big 900 million dollar lottery would surely have been won by someone Saturday night and of course that someone I was hoping would be me!! Alas, no such luck and nobody won it. Now, by the time you read this news column the jackpot will be well over 1 billion dollars and I of course will be the lucky winner. Yay, I can hardly wait…I have my plans already made as to what to do with all that money.

I received word that Edna Fredrick passed away on Jan. 2, 2016 in a Minot hospital. Edna was born Sept. 12, 1928 to Edwin and Christma (Larson) Arneson. She grew up in Ryder and graduated from the 1946 class of Ryder High School. She is survived by her husband Clifford of Minot; sons, Daniel of Ft. Lauderdale, Fla.; Mark of Northfield, Minn.; daughters, Brenda Peterson of Minot; Julie (Dick Pross of Fargo; 6 grandchildren; 6 great-grandchildren; sister, Ruth Wurtz of Ryder; brother, David (Debbie) Janz of Dickinson; brother-in-law, Rudy Evansvold and numerous nieces and nephews.
Edna’s Celebration of Life Service was held on Jan. 6th at Christ Lutheran Church, Minot. Interment: Sunset Memorial Gardens, Minot.

I received a little more Christmas news: Faye and Bud Karna entertained on Christmas Eve.  They were joined by daughter, Kellie, and her family. The next day they all went out to New Salem and spent Christmas Day with Kyann and her children.

Carrie Olson Severance with Jim Erb, Bud Wilson, Larry Petz

This little girl had an early-age love for horses. In the photo you see her on Jimmy Erb’s horse with Jim holding it. The other gentlemen in the picture are Bud Wilson and Larry Petz. These 3 Ryder gentlemen are now all deceased and greatly missed by the community. This little girl grew-up and moved away, but has returned to the Ryder community as a wife, teacher and ranch helper to her husband. Yep! This is Carrie Olson Severance. She and Rod are enjoying their own horses now plus the fun of their marriage and new careers.

Levi Sprinkle wearing cousin Johnny McGrath’s “shades”.

I had the privilege of babysitting grandson #2, Levi Sprinkle Saturday night. He sure is a busy little boy and kept this grandma on her toes. My house isn’t little kid proof anymore and he sure found lots of things to get into! He discovered that he liked the dog toys much more than the ones his parents sent over and he sure liked a lot of Johnny’s toys. He spent half the night running around wearing Johnny’s sunglasses. I do have one question tho…why do little kids go and hide behind a chair after messing their diaper? Maybe it just runs in this family!

The following is some old news that Faye Karna has shared from the Ryder Museum files:
Blue Hill used to be a very active community located south of Ryder. Here are some newspaper clippings from the early 1950’s that center on that area. Hope you enjoy the recall of names and events. These are being taken from an old scrapbook given to the Ryder museum and some dates are not included. So, there may be some mistakes in the dates for which we apologize but cannot correct. Who would we ask for this help?
You may notice that events or names are repeated several weeks in a row. Am not sure if Mamie Olson, writer at that time, forgot what she had written the week before or just felt it was important enough to repeat. Maybe the paper editor made the errors. Also, you will notice comments or questions in some areas. If you can answer these or supply additional information, let someone on the museum board know so they can update their records.

May 1, 1950  Blue Hill News by Mamie Olson
“Saturday, April 22, everyone really thought spring had come to stay with a perfect warm day.  Sunday morning a shower of rain had fell and light showers fell intermittently all day, when about 9 o’clock a heavy rain started and about 11 o’clock it turned to snow and what a snow we did get. Minot reported 16 inches of snow. Anyway we did get a lot and with the strong east to north easterly wind, it really made drifts again. The REA went off about 5 o’clock Monday morning and we had no current until shortly after midnight Wednesday morning. No telephone communication as many telephone poles were broken and down. Two miles south from Ryder, over thirty poles are laying down. The situation is much the same or worse in other places. The linemen out of Ryder started work on Thursday to reset poles and straighten out the tangled mess. No school at Blue Hill on Monday. Since Monday the weather has been cloudy and a bit chilly until Thursday when quite a lot of the snow melted.
Harry Peterson, Don and Carl Boe went to the John Slobojan ranch near Blackwater Saturday to help Slobojan dehorn and vaccinate cattle.
Many Blue Hill folks went to Ryder Saturday where last rites for Fred Bussmann were held at the Presbyterian Church.
Mr. and Mrs. Chet Braasch and Billy of Roseglen and Mr. and Mrs. Lloyd Sorenson, Karen and Kathy of Minot visited at Harry Peterson’s on Sunday.
Mr. and Mrs. William Linnertz and family, Mr. and Mrs. Joe Plasiance and family and Cora Plasiance, all of Minot, were Sunday visitors at the John Linnertz home. Cora Plasiance remained and spent the week until Friday at the Linnertz home.”

There, I hope everyone enjoyed that little trip into the past. I found it quite interesting, especially that snow storm!

   Upcoming Events:

   Jan. 17: St. Paul’s Lutheran Church Service 8:00 a.m.; St. John’s Lutheran Church Service 9:30 a.m.; Immanuel Lutheran Church Service 11:00 a.m.

Jan. 23: 5:00 p.m. St. John’s Lutheran Church Service with 6:00 p.m. supper and annual meeting.

Jan. 24: 9:00 a.m. St. Paul’s Lutheran Church Service with 9:30 breakfast and annual meeting.

Jan. 24: 11:00 a.m. Immanuel Lutheran Church Service with 12:00 p.m. lunch and annual meeting.

Looks like this is it for this week. I figure it was way too cold to go out and make any news or get into any trouble! Maybe next week??

Ryder News Jan. 7, 2016

Ryder News for Jan. 7, 2016

First of all, I have a correction to the 4 generation picture that I shared in the Dec. 24th edition of the Ryder News. The picture caption should read left to right: Amy Makeeff (great granddaughter), Kacee Makeeff (great-great granddaughter), Gayle Semmen (granddaughter) and Doris Sorenson (step-grandmother). My apologies for the mistake.

Hilman and Phyllis Anderson 50th Wedding Anniversary.

Hilman and Phyllis Anderson sent me the following news: “Hi Sue, We wanted to share the news that we made it to 50 years together. We celebrated in July with a tour of Alaska with our children and grandchildren. We were together again to share the actual date December 26. The temperature was 60 degrees warmer this December 26th than it was 50 years ago. We are spending another winter in Iowa with  our children and grandchildren. HAPPY NEW YEAR to all of you back in ND. Hilman and Phyllis  Anderson, 703 Rosedale Dr., Center Point, Iowa  52213.”
Hey…Hil and Phyl (that’s what I call them) congratulations on 50 years and hope you have many more together.

And speaking or writing about wedding anniversaries, we have a few more to share with you, Dean and Lanette Schenfisch of Makoti celebrated 33 years, Ron and Muriel Peterson celebrated 47 years and Pastor Charles and Jill Galloway celebrated 46 years.

Russel and Jeanette Johansen Wedding picture.

Russel and Jeanette Johansen 70th Wedding Anniversary.

The following is an e mail I received from Colleen Sorenson with a write up about her parents' 70th wedding anniversary. “Russel and Jeanette Johansen celebrated their 70th wedding anniversary at the Souris Valley Care Center in Velva on Sunday December 27th . Those in attendance were Jeanette’s twin sister Jeanice and husband George Officer; Russel’s brother Gerald Johansen and wife Delina, and son Bryce; daughter Colleen Sorenson (Larry), their children Travis and wife Carissa with their children Piper and Benit; Marcy Lautenschlager and her children Zoe Lautenschlager and Shayd Dalen and friend Laura Vangsness; niece Marcia Haugen and husband Dave and daughter Jackie; Terry and DelRaye Johansen and granddaughter Laura Rockwell; Pastor Jonathan Starks and wife Pam from Calvary Church in Ryder and their son Daniel and daughter Priscilla.
Russel and Jeanette were married on December 27th, 1945 at Bethany Lutheran Church in Minot when Russel was home on a short leave from the Merchant Marines. Jeanette lived in Minot at that time and worked at Union National Bank. Russel returned to the training center at Sheepshead Bay in New York 3 days following the wedding. Russel and Jeanette’s attendants were Jeanice (Skogen) Officer and David Johansen (Russel’s older brother) now deceased.
Russel was discharged from the Merchant Marines in June 1947. They then made their home on the farm near Ryder when William and Lena Johansen moved into Ryder and Russel and Jeanette continued the farming operation at the family farm.
Russel and Jeanette have five children: Janice Bleeker of Victoria, TX; Larry and wife Linda Johansen of El Dorado Hills, CA; Colleen and husband Larry Sorenson of Minot, ND; Craig and wife Mel Johansen of Ryder, ND; and Darla Osborn of Victoria, TX.
Russel and Jeanette moved to a condo in Minot in 1999.
Jeanette has been at the Souris Valley Care Center since September 2011 after suffering from a stroke in 2009 and later a fall with a compression fracture in her back in 2011 which left her unable to walk. Jeanette rarely forgets a face or name and will address all former friends and family by name when they come to visit. She still has her good natured attitude and has been told by workers there they wish they had 50 Jeanette’s. Russel resides in their condo in Minot at 2420 8th St SW.
Russel and daughter Colleen make Sunday afternoon visits to Jeanette on a weekly basis.
The family appreciates the thoughtfulness of all who have sent cards and notes to Jeanette over the years.

It looks like there were a lot of weddings in Dec. I guess people wanted another tax deduction and what a perfect way to get it!

Pat and Joyce McKinzie and Tom and Linda Madsen were Christmas Eve supper guests of Julie and Lee Brandvold and kids! Grandma and Grandpa took the grandkids, Shelsey and Stetson, along to the Calvary Church and they were able to take in the horse and wagon rides around town before church started. The kids really enjoyed the wagon ride and we all enjoyed the Candle-light church services. After the wonderful supper, gifts were exchanged.
On Christmas Day, the Brandvolds hosted Lee's side of the family for dinner and supper and Pat and Joyce joined them for supper. It was kinda hairy for a while when the power went out at the Brandvolds. Luckily it wasn't off long. Of all times! But a good time was had by all!

Speaking of power, yes, with all the fog we have had the past several weeks, frost was forming on the electric lines causing them to droop real low and with the wind blowing they touch and then short out and off goes the power. Sometimes the electric poles also go down and then there goes the power! The first time a week or so ago, the power was off for 4 hours, then the next time several days later it was off for an hour and a half and this last time on Sunday ours started out by flickering and then eventually went off for a total of 5 times but only stayed off for a few seconds to a minute. Lucky for all of us it wasn’t a raging blizzard with wind chills to -40.

Daniel Starks at Gideon's Trumpet Christian Bookstore.

This past Christmas season found Daniel Starks quite busy sharing his musical talent. He helped provide Christmas music for Jacobsen’s Music Store in Minot, Saturday, December 12. The following Friday, December 18, he provided music for the Christmas party at The Meadows Assisted Living in Garrison. On Saturday, December 19 he was doing music for the “Birthday Party for Jesus” at Gideon’s Trumpet Christian Bookstore in Minot. This was added on top of his music ministry at Calvary Church in Ryder each week. He’s glad to get a break before his next gig on January 16 at 6:00pm where he is invited to be one of the groups opening for the Kody Ternes CD Release Show at the Pursuit Church downtown location in Minot. Yes, his family is proud of him!

Busy holiday household for John and Janice Warner.  Sunday the 20th they hosted their annual Warner Holiday party, this year in their house instead of the school house. About 30 friends and family enjoyed an evening of eating and socializing.  Mallory, Mark and Mabel Warner-Richter of Minneapolis were able to attend and stayed at the farm until Christmas morning. Robert, Krista, Alana and Sophia Savian of Rosemount MN were able to visit Lindsey and Kris Ilenda in Grand Forks on the 23rd and then joined the family on the 24th for Christmas Eve and then stayed at the farm for a few days as well. Lisa and Sue Warner of Bismarck and Jordyn, Ethan and Seth were there on Saturday to celebrate with the sisters.   The four wheeler and sleds got a real workout those few days. Jordyn was able to stay until New Year’s Day. Janice says what a joy to have so many people here and all were able to travel safely. A Blessed New Year!

We had the pleasure of having our grandson Johnny McGrath spend New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day with us. He managed to stay up and do the countdown to 2016.

The Ryder Food Pantry was the happy recipient of a very nice monetary donation from Santa.

Looks like this is it for the first Ryder News column of the New Year. Thanks for all your news items and let’s keep up the good work!!
