   There isn’t much news for this week as we are on a very short deadline!

   I will take this opportunity to wish everyone out there in reader land a Very Merry Christmas and a Happy Healthy New Year.

   There were quite a few Christmas programs around the area and I did manage to get a picture of Shelsey and Stetson Brandvold before the Max School Christmas Program. Their program was on held on Tuesday December 16. Shelsey is in 3rd grade and Stetson is in Kindergarten. Both classes sang 3 songs in the program. They are the children of Lee and Julie Brandvold of Ryder.

      I received the following e mail from Jesse Shafer and he says, “Sue-- My copy of the 11-27-14 Independent arrived here in Portland OR today and I was amazed to see the picture of the threshing machine on Round Top Hill. As you can see it matches the pic Kelly sent to me on Nov. 17th as he was going from the Shafer Farm at Roseglen back to Kenmare. Small world isn't it? You and Kenny have a Merry Christmas. Jesse.”

   Well Jesse was right, it is the very same picture that Kelly sent him and also sent it to me. He thought it would be fun to see if any of my readers could identify where it was sitting.

   The picture of Ted’s Garage Crew (Back row l to r): Hal Severance, Jerry Petz, Fred Reinisch, Ted Simmons. (Front row l to r) Dean Simmons, Rod Officer, Daryl Simmons and Gorlyn Wohlk has generated a few e mails and phone calls. Darci (Wohlk) Behles and Clyde Rostad each missed one and guessed the year as anywhere from 1970-972.  Rod Officer of course had them all correct and he figured the year was 1974.

   Wow, there sure are a lot of kids from around the Ryder area that I have no idea of who they are! I took some pictures at Santa Day but don’t be upset when there is no name with the picture.

   Speaking of Santa Day, it seemed to be a huge success with the kids and adults alike. For the first hour, the kids had a fun time making projects at the 4 different project tables that were set up. They made ornaments to put on the tree and other little Christmas items, a different thing for each table. Then of course they all got to visit with Santa altho some were a little reluctant to sit on his lap. Lots of folks turned out to see if their name would be drawn for a turkey. There were 40 turkeys given away and I did manage to get one! The sponsors for the turkey give away were: BHG Inc., BOS Inc., City of Ryder, Kimball Masonry, Enerbase, Envirotech, Gayle Semmen, Happy Hour Sr. Citizens, Maureen Hagen Foster Care, North Country Oil Services, Old Ryder Jaycees, Otter Tail Power Co., Rod’s Excavating, RTC, Ryder American Legion Post #99, Ryder Centennial Committee, SunPrairie Grain CHS, and Town and Country Credit Union. The Ryder Community Club furnished cookies, cider and hot cocoa for everyone attending and they also supplied the materials for the workshop project tables.

   Annette Nelson sent me a picture of her grandson Braden wearing Lloyd Bofenkamp’s old Ryder baseball uniform. Braden is the son of Brent and Brook Nelson, grandson of Tim and Annette and great grandson of Lorraine and the late Pete Nelson and of Barbara and the late Lloyd Bofenkamp.

   There will be a celebration of Doris Landon's 90th birthday on Saturday, December 20, 2014 at Brentmoor Assisted Living in Minot. The celebration will begin at 2:00 Saturday afternoon with cake and coffee. A short program will follow at 3:00 with music by Bill Merck from 3:30 to 4:30. Doris requests no gifts for her birthday. 

   The Makoti Senior center had a great Christmas dinner.  They had 48 people attend from all over the area and they got to visit with friends they had not seen in a while. The next meeting is Wednesday, January 14, 2015 and is a pot luck.  More information will be coming about the supper.  Many new members signed up for the 2015 year and if you would like to join, you may contact Vonda Rensch, Wanda Mulligan or Connie Fischer.  

   Terry Hovde put short movies on Facebook of a fantastic Christmas program that was held this Sunday at Ryder’s Presbyterian Church. I wasn’t able to attend but it looked like they had a fun time putting it on. 

   Behind the scenes at the Presbyterian Church on Saturday for Sunday’s program: Kids practice for Sunday school program at church. They are served dinner at the church so from there they can go directly to the school gym for Christmas/Santa projects. Thanks to the wonderful people that served the kid’s dinner at the church which helps to keep the kids in town for the Santa Day activities at the gym.

   Santa Day in Makoti will be on Saturday, December 20 at 2:00 PM. There will be a turkey drawing and a visit from Santa. Everyone is invited to attend.

   Looks like this is the all the news for this time and since we had freezing rain Sunday night and Monday morning, I sure hope everyone drove carefully and stayed out of the ditches and avoided accidents. I am reasonably sure that by the time you read this news that the ice will be gone and roads in good driving condition again.
