Ryder News for Nov. 26, 2020
Happy Thanksgiving everyone. I hope everyone had lots to eat and enjoyed our nice weather.
A
lady by the name of Dianne Snell contacted the Ryder Facebook page and
was wondering if I knew of anyone with a picture of the old schoolhouse
near Rice Lake Ranch, circa 1920? Her mother was the teacher that year.
She had gone there once several years ago and found the location, but
the school was gone. She has a picture of her Mom with some of the kids,
and a story about her keeping them in the schoolhouse during a
blizzard. If anyone has information they would like to share, please
contact Julie Brandvold at ljbranch@restel.com so we can help out Dianne.
The
Rocky Acres 4H Club met on Sunday at the Max Civic Center. They
followed state regulations by using social distancing and wearing
masks. They had their meeting and got to take home an Embroidery "Take
and Make" project. Julie Brandvold, Leader of the group is trying to
think outside the box for lessons and projects for the months to come.
She has about 30 kids in the club ages ranging from 5-17. If you have
any project ideas, she would love to hear about them. Also, if anyone
would like to join 4H or know more about it, contact Julie Brandvold ljbranch@restel.com for more information.
Do
any of you Ryder readers remember any of the 1953 Ryder seniors? They
lost another member, Gerald Mahoney, on Nov. 12, 2020 due to health
issues enhanced with Covid complications. Gerald was the son of Bernard
and Lila Mahoney and lived in Ryder with his other siblings: Rosella,
Vinona, Patsy, Judy, Irene, Crystal and Cecelia (deceased 2007), Bernard
(deceased 1991) and infant sister, Mary.
Gerald
served in the Navy and then worked for the Postal Service for 30 years
and was President of the local union. He also served many years on the
Legion Color Guard. Gerald's classmates follow with the dates of deaths:
Myron Brandt (2016), Muryl Danks (2018), Lois Brandt McKenzie (2016),
Janice Eide Reinhart (1998), Those still among us are Don Peterson,
Marlyn Hansen Beaton (who lives in SD), and Lloyd Dahl. We do not know
the latest on Gerald Ness; but, if you have an update on him, please
let me (Sue) know the latest info. so museum records can be updated.
As
we are all thankful this time of year, the Ryder Museum has much
appreciated the donations that have been given to us, either as a
memorial or cash in the tip jar. We are still working on the Soo Line
train display and upgrading the church display with memory boxes. If
you have anything from the 5 churches that have been in Ryder, contact
John Warner and we can see if they will fit in the display boxes.
Looking forward to next year when the plan is to rearrange a few
displays in the old building and get a new roof. People that view our
little museum are always commenting on the great care that has been
taken to preserve our heritage. Many Blessings!
Recent
Deer Hunting guests at the Jody and Peggy Reinisch home were Larry
Reinisch, Bismarck, Tim and Grant Ellensen of Fargo. Nick Reinisch,
Alex DesRoches, Josh and Jody joined in the hunt too. All six of the
guys with licenses were successful!!

From
Nov. 9th to Nov. 20th, the students and staff at North Shore Plaza
School held a food drive for the local pantry in Ryder. The students
were competing to win a pizza party for their class. The 5th grade class
and the 9th grade class will be enjoying parties this next week. The
student council members counted the items and helped load into the
vehicle for transportation. Over 750 items were given to the food
pantry.

Harvey Billadeau was inducted into the Cowboy Hall of Fame this year, 2020.
Harvey
Billadeau was born March 17, 1953 to Leon and Lorraine Billadeau. He
grew up on the family farm/ranch south of Parshall, ND and west of Raub,
ND. As a young child Harvey had a love for horses and riding and was
always dragging around a rope. He started roping calves in the feedlot,
pasture, and at brandings.
Harvey
attended school in Parshall, where he was a standout athlete in
football, track, and rodeo. He participated in the calf roping, team
roping, and steer wrestling events at the high school, amateur, and
professional levels. He won the NDRA rookie cowboy award in 1970 and
went on to win multiple state titles in all three timed events and the
all-around from the 1970s to 90s in the NDRA and RRA. He is one of only
two cowboys to win NDRA titles in all three timed events.
Harvey
bought his PRCA card in 1976 and was the Badlands Circuit Runner-Up in
the calf roping and finished 7th in the steer wrestling that year. He
went on to enter many of the big rodeos across the country and Canada
placing in many rounds and averages. He won the Home On The Range calf
roping match 2 times with Sonny Ehr and Tom Needham.
In
1979, Harvey made a business decision to come back to the family farm
and rodeoed on a very limited basis. He started amateur rodeoing again
in 1987 and continued to do so with his children until the early 2000s.
For several years in the 90s he and his brothers provided quality timed
event stock for both the RRA and NDRA.
Throughout
his rodeo career Harvey served on the board of directors for the NDRA,
RRA, and NDHSRA. In 1985, he was instrumental in the formation of the
Parshall Roughriders, with roping and youth events. He also organized
the Match of Champions timed event rodeo and the RRA Optional Event
Finals that they hosted.
Harvey
married Cynthia Lerberg on June 19, 1975. He and Cynthia farm/ranch
south of Parshall with their children, Jessica & Preston. Training
good horses and being able to rodeo with his children were his greatest
passions. He now enjoys watching his grandchildren starting to compete
and continues to support the sport he loves.
I
guess I am officially moved out of my farm home and into my new home in
Ryder but...I still have some clothes to bring over, sort through and
throw away. I can’t believe all the clothes I have. But since I keep
changing sizes I guess that’s why I have so much. Still have to go up to
the attic and get a few things down. I don’t know who is brave enough
to go up there armed only with a flashlight to fight the cobwebs.
I
have some disappointing news to report on the state of my cancer. After
doing so well the last few years, this stupid stuff has decided to
reawaken on my liver. I thought those spots were dead. Anyway, I will be
starting a new drug in a few days and I was told that there have been
good results with it. So wish me luck and send prayers.
On
Dec. 18th, Friday from 4 p.m to 6 p.m. they are going to have another
drive by to give out the Christmas food meal boxes. You sign up at the
Ryder Post Office. Read the instruction sheet when you go in to sign up.
They will not hold food boxes for anyone.
There
will be a Covid safe turkey drive by give away on Dec. 19th starting at
1 p.m. It will be 1 turkey per family/car sponsored by the Ryder
Community Club. You don’t have to sign up for the turkey giveaway. It
will be first come, first served until they are out of turkeys.
Nov.
29...10:30 a.m. Ryder’s Calvary church will continue to hold Parking
Lot Drive-In Church services at 10:30 every Sunday morning until further
notice. Tune to 107.5 on your FM radio station to listen to the
service.
Nov. 29...10 a.m. All Parish Worship at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Roseglen.
