It is always fun to take a trip.  These 3 girls had never taken a trip together before so decided it was time to head to Yellowstone and to the Tetons.  They saw many beautiful views including geysers, waterfalls, wildlife, lakes, rivers and the mountains themselves.  Here they are at a man-made lake with their guide for the day.  Do you recognize these gals?  How about their guide? We received news of the passing of Lyle Beaton, formerly from Minot area. He was married to Marilyn Hansen, a 1953 Ryder graduate.  Her parents were Elmer and Flo (Bowen) Hansen who lived east of Ryder.  Marilyn and Lyle were living in Rapid City, SD where Marilyn remains as some of their children live there also. 

I saw in the Minot paper that Dennis Schmidt of Minot had passed away on Sept. 23rd in a Minot hospital. Dennis was Ryder’s acting Postmaster several years ago and we all hated to see him leave. He was such a friendly and nice guy.  

A private by invitation graveside service will be held at Rosehill Memorial Park in Minot on October 12, 2020. A livestream of the service will be available 1:00 p.m. by accessing https://www.mtmsales.net/thomas.

Public Visitation will be held on October 11, 2020 from 1:00 p.m. until 4:00 p.m. at Our Redeemer’s Church, Minot. 

A Celebration of Life for Dennis will be held next summer when we are permitted to gather without restriction.

We had election of officers at our monthly Senior Citizens meeting and I was once again voted in to be the Vice President, Fern Skarphol was voted in as the new treasurer to take Gary Hagen’s place. The other officers remained the same.

My cat Shadow must dearly love me as he is always leaving me little animal presents. I got up the other morning to let him out and I saw beside my bed a little deceased mouse that he had dropped off. I remember one morning he had left a little mouse face on the pillow next to Kenny. What a cat!!

 

My new garage.

My garage is finished and now I can start putting stuff in it. In the picture, notice the photo cell lights that were installed by my son-in-law John McGrath. I sure do appreciate all the wiring work that he did inside the garage. Of course, it all had to be inspected by his boss as John is an apprentice electrician.

My new home is now painted inside. She (my painter) did a fantastic job. I love it and I love the colors I picked out with the help of my daughter Staci. I will share a picture of the home next week so you can see what the outside looks like. Now I am waiting for my steps to be built so I can start moving furniture in and then get moved in! After Senior Citizens I had to stop over at my new home as there was a light on and then I noticed a window left open.  Fern Skarphol and Ron and Muriel Peterson stopped over to take a peek. They loved it!!

The Ryder Senior Citizens have been in contact with White Drug of Minot and they have agreed to come to Ryder to administer flu shots. They need to know how many are interested. Ryder News for Oct. 1, 2020 

Jennifer Vermeire Andreachi said, “Love the news! Congratulations Sue on your new home (it’s all coming together!) and thank you to our local pantry workers for all their efforts to continue to serve our community!” 

Around 6 Wednesday morning I had to get up to let the dog out and I discovered it was pouring down rain. We didn't get much rain only ten hundredths, but oh boy talk about thunder and lightning, the thunder was so loud that it shook the house. Also there was lots of brilliant lightning. The rain was coming down sideways from the north. When all was said and done, I had pine needles all over the yard, deck and cement in front of the  garage. 

The Plaza-Makoti elevator merged with the Max elevator and became Tri-Gen Partners. They then partnered with Agrex Inc. out of Minneapolis and purchased my farm home and land to build a shuttle grain terminal with a loop track. (That’s why I’m moving into Ryder!) The terminal will have a little more than 1 million bushel storage capacity and more than 10,000 feet of track. This is on the west side of ND Highway 28 and north side of Ward County Road 22 at Ryder. They are expecting to employ 4 to 5 people when all is said and done and hope to be up and running by harvest time next year.

Andrew Hagen got his deer on his first hunt and it was an 85 yard perfect shot in the lungs. Andrew is the son of James and Misty Hagen. 

ELECTION 2020 NEWS: 

BALLOTS can be brought in person or deposited in the secure drop box at the Ryder City Hall until 5:00 p.m. on Monday, Nov 2, 2020. 

IN PERSON VOTING: You can vote in person from 7 a.m. until 7 p.m. on Nov 3, 2020. 

I’ll have a picture of my garage with next week’s news. It is finally almost done...yay! I hired a painter and she started Sunday morning. She has the utility room and kitchen done so far. I can hardly wait until all is done and I can move in. I still have a lot of stuff to pack up but I’m working at it. I’m hunting for a moving company to move some of the heavier stuff and my family and friends can hopefully help me with moving my boxes.

Wow, I sure had a lot of responses to the picture of Lena Johansen’s birthday party from 1977. Some of the responses were: Nancy Shuelke said, “Thanks Sue! Love this picture.” Jan Bleecker said, “Thank you for sharing.” Sheryl Erb Tolson said, “Thanks Sue. The picture of these Ryder ladies is a treasure.” Elaine Alderman said, “It's neat to see pictures like these. A lot of nice ladies and so many have gone to a better place.” Tara Tabor said, “Faces I remember from my childhood....thank you.” Dana Johansen Smith said, “I see my Grandma, Great-Grandma, and Great Aunt!!”

The Community Food Pantry was the proud recipient of the Brawny Strong reward. They received 1000 rolls of Brawny paper towels and a $1000.00 donation from the Brawny Company. 

Avery Cree with her deer.

Avery Cree shot her first deer on her 12th birthday on her grandpa Dave Kimball’s land, not even an hour after the youth season opened. Gramma and grandpa Kimball,  and her parents, Carl and Crystal Cree are very proud of her! 

We lost another 1947 Ryder graduate on Sept. 17th. Marion Olson Quick passed away that day from a stroke. She was the daughter of Albert and Hazel Bowen Olson and had one brother, Ray Olson, who managed the Ryder Coop Creamery for a number of years. Marion attended all 12 years of school in Ryder.  She had 3 daughters one of which lives in Minot.  

If any of my readers know of any members from the class of 1947 that are still living, please let me (Sue) know. This is info that is collected for the Ryder Museum records. 

Food Pantry News: 

With Covid 19 making its way into our rural area, we will have to hunker down and change things at the Food Pantry in Ryder once more. Masks and gloves have to be worn at all times! No kids, and only 2 people at a time. Please remember to have a list ready, because the time in the food pantry will be limited!! Please be respectful, we have no choice (you all have been angels). If you can’t make it Saturday, 10 a.m.-1 p.m. please call, so we can get you in at another time!

Classic Car Show in Makoti

I didn’t make it to the Classic Car Show in Makoti but I did manage to get a picture. It sounded like there were lots of cars and people taking in the event.

My wonderful son-in-law, John McGrath, got everything ready so the AC and Heating guys could come in and finish hooking up my air conditioner and check out the furnace in my new home. He also installed 3 photo cell lights on my new garage. Sure is nice to be related to someone that can do all this stuff for me! 

I’m still waiting for the garage doors to be installed on my garage. I also need to have 2 sets of steps built so we can get in and out of my home. Those trailer house steps that they give you just aren’t very sturdy. The interior guys are finishing up in the house today, they even shampooed the carpets! I hired a painter to come in and paint for me so I have to let her know when the interior is ready. I also have to hire a moving company to move all my stuff over there. I had planned on having my family and friends do the moving but that will just take too long. I think it is better to get it all done at once and be done with it. It will probably take me months tho to find a place for everything!

Lena Johansen’s 80th birthday party on Sept. 17, 1977

Colleen Sorenson sent me a picture of her grandma Lena Johansen’s 80th birthday party picture on Sept. 17, 1977. The picture was taken by Joan Janz. The ladies in the picture are: Back Row L to R: Rosina Kraft, Jeanette Johansen, Catherine Haugen, June Nelson, Delina Johansen, Gloria Johansen and Jenny Linnertz.

Colleen said that her grandpa William had passed away in April of 1977 and this was her grandma’s first birthday since his passing. She had so many nice Ryder ladies as friends. 

This coming Friday, Sept. 18th, the Dakota Cruisers Car Club will be cruising into Makoti around 10:45-11 a.m. There could be up to 75 cars. They will be stopping at Neil Larson’s shop in town and going to the threshing grounds followed by a trip out to Hiddenwood Lake. 

If you’re interested in checking out a bunch of great looking vehicles head over to Makoti this Friday.  It will be fun to see the city lined up with cars!!!

Faye Karna sent me the following: "It was fun reading the update on Allegra (Lee) Bluhm Haugen in the Sept. 3 edition.  It is always fun to catch up on any former Ryder resident and/or graduate.  However, Lee is now living back in Garrison, not Minot. Other past info for you readers is that she graduated from Ryder in 1942. She was raised 5 miles east of Ryder and had 5 siblings named Gerhardt, Marvel, Beverly, Darlene (Dee) and Paul Jr. Their parents were Paul and Hulda  

(Reiman) Bluhm. 

Another of Kermit and Marcy Hansen’s grandsons got married on September 5th in Minot, ND. Ty Nygaard married Tayler Novak who was raised south of Minot.  Ty is the son of Kelly and Kari Hansen Nygaard. Kari graduated from Ryder-Makoti North Shore in 1986. Congratulations to Ty and Tayler. 

Another fun time for Marcy Hansen was the gathering of their entire family at the farm to celebrate one of her special birthdays. There may have been more than that one reason to gather but we know it was and will be just hard to get them all together anymore with busy lives and jobs. To make it so special all 5 of the great-grandchildren were present so it was a moving, active time.  Hard to even get those special pictures!" 

There isn’t much news for this week. I sure hope this nice weather sticks around for a while, at least until I get moved into my new home and that is a few weeks away yet.  

Staci and Johnny came out to visit me last Saturday while John was at his Guard Drill in Fargo. She and Johnny were excited to go all through my new home and look at everything. 

I am having one of my propane tanks moved over there and hooked up so the guy that does the interior work can start. He needs to have heat in the house when he finishes up the sheetrock and muds it otherwise it just won’t dry. I had to call 811 so Cenex can be sure they won’t hit anything when they trench the propane line in. Boy, that was some phone call...I was asked a whole lot of questions and then had to listen to all my answers one more time so they could record it. Glad that is over! 

The garage is coming along nicely and when the overhead doors are installed, I will share a picture. I had a propane and heating fellow come over and change all the orifices in the stove and furnace. Wow, that was a job, took him quite a while and then he had to come back the next day to finish stubbing out the propane hook-up. He didn’t have all the stuff he needed to get it done the first time. Sure will be glad when all this piddling stuff is done. 

In the meantime, I’ve been trying to pack stuff up. My house is full of boxes, empty and full. What a mess! I guess I will hire a moving company to come out and move my stuff, that way it will all be done in one day.
