Ryder News for June 13, 2019

Ha Ha John McGrath, the twins did win one game against Cleveland and are still 10 games ahead of them, so Ha Ha! For those of you that don’t know...John, my son-in-law, being from Ohio is of course rooting for the Cleveland Indians baseball team and I am all for the Minnesota Twins! There was a series of 3 games between the 2 teams last week and of course smart remarks were made between the two of us!!

Mystery Photo

We have a new mystery photo. This little guy grew up in the surrounding area, has 3 siblings and still lives in the area. He is probably 2 or 3 in the picture. Any guesses as to who he could be?

Grace Magandy’s great granddaughter, Kaylee with her rebounding trophy

Grace Magandy’s great granddaughter, Kaylee Magandy  won a trophy at Trooper Camp in Garrison for Best Rebounding in her age group. She is the daughter of Chris and Carrie Magandy of Garrison. Congratulations, Kaylee!

We had a little rain storm go through Ryder on Sunday. The storm left .28 of an inch in the rain gauge along with some small hail on the ground.

Well, the mystery photo lady  was identified as Lena Geving.  Lorraine Nelson, Sonja Kline and Wendell Hjelmstad had the correct answer. Wendell said this, “Hi, Sue, I do believe the mystery photo is Lena Geving, hope I'm right.
Sorry to hear of Derald Larsen's passing, we were classmates thru much of grade school and all of high school and grew up on adjoining farms south of Ryder. the grade school was called west  Centerville.”

John and Janice Warner recently were on a Scandinavian ocean cruise vacation with three of John's Leon Warner cousins and spouses. The cities visited were Stockholm, Sweden; Helsinki, Finland; St. Petersburg, Russia; Tallinn, Estonia; Gdansk, Poland; Berlin, Germany; Copenhagen and Alborg, Denmark; Stavanger-Eid fjord and Bergen, Norway. Then they added a three day excursion to Reykjavik Iceland. Every port stop included a city tour to learn about the history of the country and the city, or other tours were available to include a more up front learning experience, or traveling to the countryside.  They visited many churches, Palaces, city halls, museums, opera houses and theaters with architectural points of interest, ate local foods and drank local beer and wine. Many sites are listed as world UNESCO heritage sites. Narrow streets, canals with gondola boats, fjords, National parks, and of course shopping. Janice celebrated her birthday while on vacation and the family group went to the ballet Swan Lake at the famous Mariinsky Theatre. A very exciting evening!  Upon returning to the ship, there was a birthday cake and a bottle of champagne in their room. Another highlight was soaking in the hot spring waters of the Blue Lagoon in Reykjavik. This water is heated geo-thermally, and is about 65% sea water and very comforting. They visited a volcano creator, waterfalls and learned about life on an island. Janice said it was a good thing they took lots of pictures as it's hard to separate the days and cities activities.  Vacationing is hard work!

My sister-in-law, Debbie Ludwig was the bingo winner of the consolation prize of $66 in Friday night’s last game of the evening.

The Soo Line Sunday School Convention June 20, 1937

Hiddenwood Presbyterian Church in 1916

Julie Brandvold posted this on the Ryder, North Dakota website: A letter from a nice gentlemen that I would like to share…”I have a couple of things from Ryder’s past that folks might find interesting. My name is Dave Ford, and my dad, Rev James H Ford was a student pastor at the Ryder Presbyterian Church, Mt Zion Presbyterian Church and Hiddenwood Presbyterian Church for several months around the summer of 1937. There is a bulletin from The Soo-Line Sunday School Convention June 20, 1937 that I am sharing. I am also sharing an old picture of the Hiddenwood Presbyterian Church. I have mentioned that in his papers about it being one of the three churches he served as a student pastor in 1937. I found  when the church building was sold and moved to another small town and used as a Lutheran Church (I believe it was moved to Roseglen). About a month ago I found a picture of the Hiddenwood Presbyterian Church in the North Dakota State Digital Archives. I believe this picture was taken in 1916 (dad was there in 1937). Thanks for any information you might have or any direction you might be able to steer me. Finding this stuff in my dad’s papers was pretty exciting within our family. He passed away in 1998 and I just found this stuff last year. We didn’t realize we had anything like this. Most of the family weren’t aware of the time spent in these churches as it was three years before he was ordained as a minister.”
You can reach Dave Ford at his e-mail dfrd@cox.net if you have any information for him.

Ryder News for June 6, 2019

Mystery Photo.

Yay, we have a Mystery Photo. This was a teacher for a few years in Ryder...any idea who she is..you can send your answers to me at sbradley@restel.com

Our sympathy goes out to the family and friends of Derald Larson of Minot, formerly of Ryder. Derald passed away Thursday, May 30, 2019 in a Minot hospital.

Our sympathy also goes out to the friends and family of Darik Mueller of Fargo formerly from Ryder. Darik passed away May 29, 2019. He was the son of Don and Phyllis Mueller.

Faye Karna reported that one of their grandsons, Kolby Erhardt, received the President's Education Award for Outstanding Academic Excellence on May 1st at his school's award ceremony. His parents are Kel and Tom Erhardt and his two grandmothers are  Carol Erhardt and Faye Karna.

The Hiddenwood Old Settler’s 117th annual picnic will be held on June 23, 2019 at the Hiddenwood picnic grounds 8 miles south of Makoti by Hiddenwood lake.
An All Faith’s church service will open the activities at 11 a.m. in the church on the grounds. A pot luck lunch will follow. The plates and utensils for lunch will be provided. After lunch there will be a program featuring Daniel Starks from Ryder as the entertainment. Daniel performs a wide variety of music from artists such as Elvis, Johnny Cash, and Neil Diamond along with his own blend of soul-stirring gospel. Pastor Jonathan Starks is his dad and will join in singing a few numbers. Daniel is looking forward to being at the Hiddenwood picnic and has fond memories of attending this event since childhood. Other talent is also invited on stage for the program.
Throughout the day there will be door prizes drawn for those in attendance. Kids of all ages can participate in the foot races. The Hiddenwood Ladies Famous Pies will be available after the program.
Weather does not prohibit activities as the lunch, program, pie social and drawings will be held inside the large building on the picnic grounds. All are welcome to partake in a fun filled day by the lake.

Peggy Reinisch purchased some new flower containers, flowers, lights and decorations with Wanda Bjordahl’s donation to the city park in the memory of Bud Karna. Please remember that donations are always welcome.

Cemetery sign stating regulations for decorations.

I made a special trip up to our cemetery to take a photo of the sign stating what the regulations are for the decorations on the graves in the cemetery.

Wooden flower craft project.

Mary Simmons along with Stephanie Hagen hosted a Make and Take Craft party at the Ryder Star on Sunday. DelRae Wohlk was the leader who supplied the materials for the craft construction. 20 projects were completed including bird houses, large wooden flowers and 4th of July towers. Shelsey Brandvold along with Nora and Emily Deplazes were making their craft items for 4-H projects.

Ron and Muriel Peterson from Ryder and Steve and Rondi Deaver, Carson and Cole from Minot were last weekend guests of Scot, Kari, Ana and Tate Mart of La Moure, ND. Also there were Karen Mart Taverna from Fargo; Lee and Tisha Papelow, Ivy and Jace from Worthington, MN; and Allen Mart from Crookston MN. They were all there to celebrate Ana Mart’s graduation from high school. Other local friends and relatives in attendance were Bruce and Deb Peterson; Curtis and Kaylie Peterson; Sara Schmidt, Chaskee and Piper; Faye Karna and Kellie Erhardt. Congratulations Ana!

Shannon Schoenwald from Montana spent a week visiting various relatives in Ryder, Williston, and Bismarck. In Bismarck she took the Fran Riley family on 2 days of adventures traveling to a few cities and touring. At the Harlan and Fern Skarphol home, they even took the dogs for a walk. On Saturday they had some fun going to garage sales in Velva and Surrey. Fern said they got lots of goodies and even Harlan got a few items.

You remember in one of the past news postings that the son of Clarence Bye was wondering about the Bye General Store of Ryder. There definitely was one and Mr. Bye was very involved in the community functions. There are many pages in the Ryder Centennial Book that record this history such as pages 28, 46-47 have pictures of the store, and pages 95 and 96 tell about the Aviation and Athletic Field dedicated in memory of O.J. Bye. That memorial still stands today. When it was dedicated in his honor, there were family members present. This is all written on page 96. There are still books available to buy at the Ryder Museum or these pages can be copied and sent.

Not much news has been collected on Ole and Knute Meland to send back to their relative in Norway. One Ryder man reported that he had talked to a man named Meland when doing business in Bismarck. That man had told him at that time that he believed Knute had died on the way to Ryder or Rice Lake. There was some attempt to locate that man at this time but to no success as he has either died or moved from the Bismarck-Mandan area. Another former Ryder man reported that he remembered Ole very well. Ole's mate was named Anna and they lived in Minot during the winter where she had a house and east of Ryder in the summer on a farm called the "old Mahoney place". This was very close to Elmer and Thelma Wilson's. This informer remembers the night that Anna died from a heart attack. Ole went to get Elmer Wilson who went to Ryder to get George Officer as he had access to a phone and was able to call the funeral home in Minot. Ed Fisher, then head of the Thompson-Larson Funeral Home in Minot, drove the hearse out to the farm that night to get her. This was around 8-9 p.m.. The cousin from Norway that was in touch with Faye Wilson Karna for such information will enjoy this input. Faye has a stand that Ole gave her folks before he left the area. She now wishes she had asked them more about Ole.

Many of you readers remember the Hjelmstad name and how it was associated with Ryder. If you need a review, just read pages 170-171 in Ryder Centennial Book. An invitation has been received to attend a 90th b-day party in honor of Stanley (Dewey) Hjelmstad and is now being shared with all you readers. It goes "Please join us to celebrate my Dad, your uncle Dewey and the man, Stan, who turns 90. 1929 was a long time ago and we look forward to hearing stories from many years. Grateful to family and friends from North Dakota and beyond who can join us. For those who can't make it, we are putting together a video, so grab a clip on you phone and send it to ksevert@gmail.com." This was sent by Stan and Eloise's daughter, Katie. Stan's b-day is July 20th. He would so enjoy hearing from any of you Ryder folks. Their address is 7500 York Ave. S. Apt. 826, MPLS. MN 55435. It would be fun if someone knew how to make a video.
