Ryder News Jan. 8, 2015

Yikes, the cold snap finally got us with below zero temps and awful wind chill temps. On the upside, we didn’t get all that snow they were forecasting…of course it sounds like there is more coming so cross your fingers that the roads stay good and we don’t receive a ton of snow.

Last week's Mystery Photo. Ryder News, Ryder, ND

The Mystery Photo answer is: (drum roll please), Front row: L to R, Terry Johansen, Donnette Morris, Steve Morris, Kevin Mueller…Back row: L to R, Jay Erb, Dennis Johansen, Randy Morris, Sandra Morris, Khylene Mueller, Donna Johansen.

And we have some correct guesses, Nancy Schuelke and Kathy Kallestad had them all correct and Sharleen Larson had all but one right. Way to go ladies…good job!

Doris Landon’s 90th birthday party.
Doris Landon celebrated her 90th birthday Saturday, December 20, 2014 at the Brentmoor Assisted Living Center in Minot, North Dakota. Over 100 of Doris's dear friends and relatives were present. Among those relatives present were Doris's nieces, Betty Ziegler, of Plymouth, Minnesota, and her daughter Bonnie Baird of Fargo, North Dakota; Sue (Tom) Geising, of Detroit Lakes, Minnesota, and their daughters Char and Clarice of Fargo, North Dakota; nephews Tom (Gwen) Price, Tim (Marion) Price both of Bismarck, North Dakota, and Joe (Marijo) Price and son, Michael of Douglas, North Dakota; Richard Becker of Ryder, North Dakota; Allen (Carol) Becker and Angela Barber of Minot, North Dakota.

Pastor Jonathan, Pam, Priscilla and Daniel Starks entertained the party goers with several Hymns. Doris's grandchildren, Justin and Jeremy Landon, related fond memories of their grandmother, and Chelsey served the birthday cake. Later, Bill Merck and his band from Minot entertained, and Doris's cousin, Dee (Harold) Edwards, of Garrison accompanied several songs with his musical saw.

Doris said she sincerely appreciated everyone coming out for her birthday and sending flowers and cards which made her birthday a very special occasion.

I received a nice letter from Betty Berg telling what her family had done for Christmas. “Christmas Eve we went to Saron church for a 5:30pm service. It was very nice. Afterwards we went home and spent the evening by ourselves and dined on a pizza supper. Our son Duane joined us as his kids had not come home yet to be with him for a couple days.

Christmas Day Paul and I, son Duane and his daughter, Makayla, and Paul's mother, headed for Turtle Lake for dinner with his sister Judy Rice and hubby Larry. My that seems like along ride down there! But hey, I would go a long ways if I did not have to cook! My youngest son Bryce and wife Wendy also came down with their two girls, Kaitlyn and Madelyn. Our oldest son Brian did not make it as they were having his wife's side for dinner. We had a delicious dinner and a nice visit with them. It has been a long time since we have gone down to Turtle Lake and it was not bad weather, or icy roads or storming. WISHING ALL OF YOU A HAPPY NEW YEAR!! Paul and Betty Zilka Berg”

John and Jan Warner entertained most of their kids and grandkids over the Christmas holiday. Lindsey and Kris Ilenda came from Grand Forks. Mark, Mallory and Mabel Warner-Richter came from Minneapolis and Lisa, Sue, Jordyn Warner, Ethan and Seth came up from Bismarck.  Jordyn was able to spend a few more days between Christmas and New Years with grandpa and grandma.  No snow so it was a little hard to go sledding! They all seemed to like the fact that John and Janice have moved and there was room for everyone that wanted to stay.

Bud and Faye Karna joined Ron and Muriel Peterson for supper on Christmas Eve.

Joining Ron and Muriel Peterson on Christmas day were Esther and Marlene Streeper of Bismarck; Mildred Peterson, and Rondi, Steve, Carson and Cole Deaver all of Minot. Mildred Peterson turned 94 on Dec. 26th but had her birthday celebration on Christmas day at Ron and Muriel’s with the rest of the family.

Ron and Muriel Peterson, Rondi and Steve Deaver with their children, and Kari and Scott Mart with their children all attended the wedding of Sammi and Lance Cleland in Deadwood, SD on Dec. 27th

On the Dec. 30th Ron and Muriel Peterson went to Bismarck to help her mother Esther Streeper celebrate her 94th birthday. Marlene Streeper of Bismarck also brought her birthday wishes.  Rodney and Arlene Wilson from Grand Forks brought flowers and birthday wishes as well for Esther’s birthday. Esther now lives in Primrose Assisted Living Facility.

Jerome Albert passed away from cancer in his home Jan. 1st. He is married to Gayle Wilson Albert and they had been living in Minneapolis. They have three children, two of which live in Minneapolis while their son Trent lives on the late Robert and Geri Albert’s place near Ryder.

Gayle’s sister Karen was able to spend last week with them in Minneapolis. She and her husband Ken Hall teach in Afghanistan. They will spend a week in Florida with their children and grandchildren before returning to Afghanistan.

This week's Mystery Photo.

Someone came up with the idea of having a mystery photo so here it is, it was taken at the old Don Morris home and that’s where Roger Folden now lives. Let’s see how many readers can identify all those kids.

We received word that Marlene Afdahl Borrison of Iowa passed away on Christmas morning. I am sure she is in heaven celebrating Christmas now with her parents, Lloyd and Margaret Afdahl and her brother Donald. She was such a nice lady and will be missed by many.

4 generation picture of Donna Haugen’s family: L to R: Duane Haugen, Donna Haugen holding Adira Haugen, Matthew Haugen
We received a 4-generation picture shared by Donna (Richard) Haugen. Donna is so proud to be a great-grandmother. Her son, Duane Haugen was raised on their farm northeast of Ryder and graduated from North Shore in 1977. Matthew Haugen, son to Duane and Carmen Haugen of Minot graduated from Minot High as did his grandmother Donna. Matthew and wife, Cathy, are now living in Minot where their daughter Adira was born. Wouldn’t Richard have enjoyed this little great-granddaughter? Thanks for sharing, Donna!

The Larson siblings from L to R: Ronnie Larson, Mike Larson, Byron Larson, Linda Jacobson, Richard Larson is in the front.
Sharleen Larson and Linda Larson were visiting several weeks ago and they decided that it would be nice to get together with the Larson siblings during the holiday season and with a few telephone calls it was all arranged. What a great way to start the week of Christmas!

Mike and Jake went to Manor Care and got Richard.  It looks like he enjoyed the day. Linda is such a good cook and makes chicken just like Grandma (Elizabeth) Larson used to make. And then there was a birthday cake for the December birthdays…Jake, Donna, Byron.

Joining Kenny and Sue Bradley for Candle Light services at St. John’s Lutheran Church on Christmas Eve were John, Staci and Johnny McGrath. Pastor Galloway grabbed Johnny and asked him if he’d like to help light the candles. Johnny said yes so away they went. We were a little afraid he would set the minister’s robe on fire before they got the Advent candles lit but they made it without a mishap.

Then it was back to our house for pizza and opening gifts. It was a fun evening.

Since January 2nd is the first Friday of that month, Bingo will be held at the Ryder school gym starting at 7 p.m.

That’s it for this week; I hope some of my readers will send me their Christmas happenings so this column can continue. Send me some pictures too. I can’t use the ones from Face Book as they just aren’t big enough.

  Have a great New Year!

Ryder News Dec. 18, 2014

I received the following e mail from Jesse Shafer and he says, “Sue-- My copy of the 11-27-14 Independent arrived here in Portland OR today and I was amazed to see the picture of the threshing machine on Round Top Hill. As you can see it matches the pic Kelly sent to me on Nov. 17th as he was going from the Shafer Farm at Roseglen back to Kenmare. Small world isn't it? You and Kenny have a Merry Christmas. Jesse.”

Well Jesse was right, it is the very same picture that Kelly sent him and also sent it to me. He thought it would be fun to see if any of my readers could identify where it was sitting.

The picture of Ted’s Garage Crew (Back row l to r): Hal Severance, Jerry Petz, Fred Reinisch, Ted Simmons. (Front row l to r) Dean Simmons, Rod Officer, Daryl Simmons and Gorlyn Wohlk has generated a few e mails and phone calls. Darci (Wohlk) Behles and Clyde Rostad each missed one and guessed the year as anywhere from 1970-972.  Rod Officer of course had them all correct and he figured the year was 1974.

Wow, there sure are a lot of kids from around the Ryder area that I have no idea of who they are! I took some pictures at Santa Day but don’t be upset when there is no name with the picture.

A little girl has a good visit with Santa and then poses for her picture.
Speaking of Santa Day, it seemed to be a huge success with the kids and adults alike. For the first hour, the kids had a fun time making projects at the 4 different project tables that were set up. They made ornaments to put on the tree and other little Christmas items, a different thing for each table. Then of course they all got to visit with Santa altho some were a little reluctant to sit on his lap. Lots of folks turned out to see if their name would be drawn for a turkey. There were 40 turkeys given away and I did manage to get one! The sponsors for the turkey give away were: BHG Inc., BOS Inc., City of Ryder, Kimball Masonry, Enerbase, Envirotech, Gayle Semmen, Happy Hour Sr. Citizens, Maureen Hagen Foster Care, North Country Oil Services, Old Ryder Jaycees, Otter Tail Power Co., Rod’s Excavating, RTC, Ryder American Legion Post #99, Ryder Centennial Committee, SunPrairie Grain CHS, and Town and Country Credit Union. The Ryder Community Club furnished cookies, cider and hot cocoa for everyone attending and they also supplied the materials for the workshop project tables.

Kids working on their projects at one of the tables on Santa Day.
Heather Janz is helping her daughter Kendall color on Santa Day.
Annette Nelson sent me a picture of her grandson Braden wearing Lloyd Bofenkamp’s old Ryder baseball uniform. Braden is the son of Brent and Brook Nelson, grandson of Tim and Annette and great grandson of Lorraine and the late Pete Nelson and of Barbara and the late Lloyd Bofenkamp.

There will be a celebration of Doris Landon's 90th birthday on Saturday, December 20, 2014 at Brentmoor Assisted Living in Minot. The celebration will begin at 2:00 Saturday afternoon with cake and coffee. A short program will follow at 3:00 with music by Bill Merck from 3:30 to 4:30. Doris requests no gifts for her birthday.

The Makoti Senior center had a great Christmas dinner.  They had 48 people attend from all over the area and they got to visit with friends they had not seen in a while. The next meeting is Wednesday, January 14, 2015 and is a pot luck.  More information will be coming about the supper.  Many new members signed up for the 2015 year and if you would like to join, you may contact Vonda Rensch, Wanda Mulligan or Connie Fischer.

Terry Hovde put short movies on Facebook of a fantastic Christmas program that was held this Sunday at Ryder’s Presbyterian Church. I wasn’t able to attend but it looked like they had a fun time putting it on.

Behind the scenes at the Presbyterian Church on Saturday for Sunday’s program: Kids practice for Sunday school program at church. They are served dinner at the church so from there they can go directly to the school gym for Christmas/Santa projects. Thanks to the wonderful people that served the kid’s dinner at the church which helps to keep the kids in town for the Santa Day activities at the gym.

Santa Day in Makoti will be on Saturday, December 20 at 2:00 PM. There will be a turkey drawing and a visit from Santa. Everyone is invited to attend.

Looks like this is the all the news for this time and since we had freezing rain Sunday night and Monday morning, I sure hope everyone drove carefully and stayed out of the ditches and avoided accidents. I am reasonably sure that by the time you read this news that the ice will be gone and roads in good driving condition again.

See you next week, same time, and same place. Have a GREAT CHRISTMAS!
